Bowman Deran Baxwal

“Really, why must I go to such a rural place?” (Baxwal)
The man with a greasy face and a protruding belly muttered complaints inside the swaying carriage.
This person, dressed in expensive but not particularly tasteful clothes and adorned with excessive jewelry, was Bowman Deran Baxwal. He was a nobleman who held a prominent position among the military aristocracy. It seemed as though he was blaming someone else for this situation, but the reality was that it was his own proposal to the princess that brought him here. So, this was entirely his own fault.
Usually, Baxwal stayed in the capital, accompanying the princess during her summer vacation unless something particularly urgent occurred. But now, he was traveling in this carriage to the Oran Military Academy, supposedly for security during confidential peace negotiations that would take place behind the scenes during the academy’s competitive events.
Of course, Baxwal had no intention of simply watching a boring discussion like a peace agreement. Instead, he planned to disrupt the talks by stationing his private soldiers and soldiers from the nobles he controls at the academy. However, as a noble with significant influence in the capital, Baxwal’s involvement in this matter was pushed through forcefully, and due to the circumstances, he could not avoid being involved.
“Really, it’s all that annoying young fool, Follet’s fault.” (Baxwal)
He chewed on a bone-in piece of meat and some fruit prepared in the carriage, and when he got bored, he threw them out the window.
He had known that Follet, the princess’s younger brother, had been moving around for the peace negotiations for some time. Baxwal had judged that Follet would not achieve anything, so he had been watching him and sneering at his futile efforts while using them as an excuse for drinking.
Of course, whenever Follet tried to accomplish something, Baxwal crushed it. Anything that got in his way, he smashed with force. This was how Baxwal rose to power. When did things begin to go off track for him? When did things no longer go as he wished? Ah, yes, it was around that time. When Nork, the younger brother of the influential independent noble family, Via Household, started making close contact with Follet.
At that point, Baxwal had considered eliminating Nork as a warning to Follet and as a way to keep him in check. However, as he was making these plans, news came in that Nork was heading to meet with his niece at the Oran Military School.
Nork’s niece, Kinder Via Lavitomivia, was said to be a highly regarded future prospect within the Via Household, the beloved daughter of the family’s head. Baxwal thought this was interesting. What would happen if he killed not Nork, but Lavitomivia instead? What face would Nork and the Via family make?
But then something unexpected happened. The soldier Baxwal had secretly stationed near Nork, a man named Zel whom he had long been fond of, failed spectacularly. Even now, recalling it, Baxwal felt frustrated.
This was where things started to go wrong.
Not long after that, Baxwal heard strange rumors.
“Duke Lengrad’s memoirs have been handed over to Remnos. The Queen of Remnos is seeking negotiations.” (??)
Baxwal had heard of Duke Lengrad’s memoirs. They were said to contain the scandals of the princess’s family, which the royal family had sealed away. His first thought had been, “So what?” Though he had been curious at first, his interest had faded within a few days. He never imagined that those memoirs would become a crucial key to the peace negotiations.
Even though the princess was pushed into this decision by the queen of Remnos, she had made a truly foolish decision. Since the queen of another country was involved, the princess had refrained from attending the meeting. Had Baxwal known this would happen, he would have ruined the meeting on the spot.
The princess should have simply listened to what Baxwal said, wage a reasonable war, and make the Deran Household prosper eternally. If she wouldn’t listen, he would force her to. In other words, he would ruin any talks about peace.
It seemed like a good opportunity when Baxwal got wind of the secret movement of Remnos’ princess, who was heading to the northern fortress from the military academy. He thought that if he attacked, Remnos would quiet down, killing two birds with one stone. So, he gave Zel one last chance. He had heard that a fiancé of the princess would be visiting Solar, and while that could have been targeted too, he believed attacking the princess herself would have a greater impact.
That, too, had failed. Baxwal now thought the north should have been targeted instead.
In Solar, there were many influential nobles secretly aligned with Baxwal, who were all eager to benefit from the war and make this lifestyle permanent. He should have trusted them in the north rather than relying on Zel. The failed Zel was sent running to the north, seeking help from the nobles of Solar. By now, he was likely enjoying his time in the cold snow, alongside his subordinates.
At that point, Baxwal felt a bit amused and chuckled softly.
Having somewhat cheered himself up, Baxwal muttered.
“But this is as far as it goes.” (Baxwal)
He had neutralized one of Follet’s trump cards, Zalard Rita. Although he hadn’t captured him yet, it would be difficult for him to do anything. And now, he had found an interesting toy. Among the students who were close to Zalard Rita, there was a young lady from the Bell Household.
The information about the Bell Household’s young lady being close to Zalard Rita had come from a child at the military academy. Whether it was true or not didn’t matter, as long as there was a witness, he could use it.
During the upcoming academy competition, Baxwal planned to settle everything. He had a scapegoat to pin the blame on and would use it to bury the Bell Household, who had been a constant annoyance.
Thinking this way, Baxwal felt a sense of enjoyment and reconsidered that a trip away might not be such a bad idea after all.
