Sudden Turn of Events (3): The Betrayed Student

Captured by Baxwal’s subordinates, I, was locked in a room where I couldn’t understand the situation outside. Then, slipping in, was Mitia, a staff member from the research building. After Mitia, the medic, treated me, I took a breath, and Mitia explained the current situation she knew.

As expected, this place was a room in the underground of the research building. It was originally used as a detention room to hold captured spies until they were handed over to the soldiers. In other words, it was a prison. There were four similar rooms in the underground, scattered in different locations to prevent coordination. In these rooms, Heinz, Rick-san, and Lites were also captured, in addition to me. Sonia, Hana, Lev, Ratt-kun, and Frank were confined in different rooms on the upper floor of the research building, separated by gender. Maria was in a separate room by herself.

Originally, the research building had many secrets, and some parts of the building were residential spaces for researchers who couldn’t go out much, so they didn’t have a problem with space. Also, Saxon and Roy-kun, at least according to Mitia, hadn’t been seen by her.

Why did this happen? Even Mitia and the other researchers were confused. It seemed that suddenly, Deran Household’s private soldiers came to the research building, saying they would arrest the rebel elements and asking for the rooms to be lent to them, and that the research building would be managed by Deran Household until the academy competition ended. Although food was provided to the researchers, they were instructed not to go outside. However, it seemed there were some researchers who were connected to Deran Household, and only those researchers were frequently coming and going.

Since Mitia was a child, her surveillance was relatively loose, and under the pretext of treatment, she had managed to get to this point. By the way, a day had passed since we were captured. When I realized how much time had passed, my stomach growled.

“Ah, sorry, I brought food too.” (Mitia)

Mitia hastily handed me a basket. Inside, there was bread and dried meat.

“How are the others doing for food?” (Lux)

“They’re being provided with meals regularly. Since I came here for treatment, I haven’t seen how the others are doing.” (Mitia)

I thanked Mitia as much as I could, feeling a bit apologetic.

Then, while biting into the bread, I listened to Mitia’s story. It seemed that we would be confined here until the academy competition ended, after which we would be transported to the royal capital. This was all Mitia knew at the moment.

“I have one question, though. Is there any way you can get us out of here?” (Lux)

I asked, asking half-heartedly.

Mitia shook her head sadly.

“I think it’s impossible because there are soldiers roaming both inside and outside the research building. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.” (Mitia)

“No, not at all! You’ve been a huge help!” (Lux)

“But… if there’s anything I can do… I want to help next time,” Mitia said. (Mitia)

Mitia was probably referring to the favor my sister, Norris, had done for her by finding a precious brooch. It wasn’t something she needed to worry about, but… As I thought about it, I suddenly had an idea.

“…Earlier, you said researchers were told not to go out, right? Does that mean they can’t go out at all?” (Lux)

“Yeah, I heard they can go out if they state the purpose and destination. But the people who went out said they were followed.” (Mitia)

“…I see… For example, could they go out for shopping?” (Lux)

“I think that would be okay…” (Mitia)

“Well, I’m sure, while going out, one might stop by a nice pastry shop, right?” (Lux)

I asked Mitia to get me paper and a pen.

The day I asked Mitia for paper and a pen, she went out of the room and came back, claiming she had forgotten her treatment tools, and successfully brought the paper and pen to me. Also, since the condition of my head injury wasn’t ideal, she said she would check on me in two or three days, and that was approved. Most people didn’t know that Mitia and I were close. The researchers who were present when we borrowed the military dog kept quiet about it.

The next day, Mitia came again, and I began writing the letter. The recipient was the butler of the Bell Household, Sebas-san. The contents included that we had been imprisoned under false suspicion, that after the academy competition, we would be transferred to the royal capital, and, of course, the Bell Household would take action, but if possible, we asked for help from General Isaiah at the northern fortress, Princess’s brother Follet-san, and from Beretta-san and General Verger from the neighboring country, Remnos.

The academy competition was fast approaching, and none of them could provide immediate aid due to the distance. However, during the competition or during the transport to the royal capital, there would be a few days’ grace. I wondered if something could be done by then. I remembered that Beretta-san had said he would attend the academy competition. Probably, General Verger would be with him too. So, there might be a little hope.

I asked the pastry chef, Holand-san, to deliver the letter to the Bell Household. I didn’t want to deliver it directly to the Bell Household because of the worry that Mitia might be monitored. If Mitia were captured, I would be cut off from external communication. I had to avoid that at all costs. I felt bad for involving Holand-san, but he was one of the few people I knew in the town. I couldn’t hesitate now. I would use whatever I could. If I managed to escape, I would go buy a lot of pastries.

Thus, I entrusted the letter to Mitia the next day, and then I just lay on the bed, thinking if there was any way I could escape.

In the evening of the day I entrusted the letter to Mitia, I felt relieved when she told me that she had successfully given the letter to Holand-san. But then Mitia said, “On my way back, I met your friend,” which caught my attention.

It was Roy-kun. Roy-kun and Saxon had been taking turns searching for a way to contact us. They knew we were imprisoned in the research building, but there weren’t many people coming and going other than soldiers, and it would be dangerous to approach the wrong person. It seemed they had spent some time choosing the right person to talk to, and when they saw a girl on her way back to the research building, they decided to speak to her.

By the way, they didn’t go together but took turns because they were cautious of Deran Household’s watch. I felt sorry for Saxon, but I was glad that it was Roy-kun’s turn. Given Mitia’s shy nature and Saxon’s personality, Mitia might have ended up crying.

The information Mitia passed on from Roy-kun was very interesting to me. First, Roy-kun and Saxon had received an order disguised as a suggestion, which said that if we participated in the academy competition as planned, our safety would be guaranteed. They were stuck in this situation but were trying to think of a way to rescue us, so they told us not to get too anxious. I was grateful, but the situation was tough.

Also, Gellar’s team withdrew from the academy competition. Officially, it was due to Gellar’s poor health. It seemed the Seg Household, Geller’s foster family, made the request. In place of their team, a team recommended by both the Seg and Deran Households was selected as the representative.

When I heard the name, I was struck with understanding. Now that I thought about it, that person knew about our connection to Rita-san. After all, he had seen us coming out of Rita-san’s house. It was Knight (Ritter) Mogi from 1-A. He sold us out.

“Thank you very much.” (Holand)

Holand, seeing the girl off, looked at the letter and tilted his head slightly. It was a strange request. The girl, who had said she was asked by Lux-kun, had asked him to deliver the letter to Sebas-san of the Bell Household. He thought it would be fine to deliver it directly, but since he knew Lux-kun, who had been quite helpful to him, he accepted the request.

“Could this be some sort of game?” (Holand)

He muttered to himself, and as he was about to put the letter away, a voice suddenly spoke in front of him, making his body tremble in surprise.

Without him noticing, a tall, beautiful woman who exuded an instinctive sense of fear was staring at him. He hadn’t noticed her at all…

“Ah, I’m sorry, I was lost in thought. Welcome.” (Holand)

He showed his usual business smile, and the woman also smiled before saying,

“Give me the best pastry you have in this shop.” (Woman)

“Ah, yes… Let me introduce you to our recommendations…” (Holand)

Just as Holand was about to do so, the woman said,

“And give me that letter too.” (Woman)

And she pointed to the letter with a smile that left no room for refusal.
