Sudden Turn of Events (2): Surprise Attack

It happened in the blink of an eye.
The preparations for the academy competition had been completed without issue, and all that remained was to wait for the actual event. As usual, we headed outside for our afternoon class. Saying things like “It’s cold, isn’t it?” we made our way to the training ground. Today’s first activity was basic endurance training, which was running. Just as we gathered on the training ground and got into position to listen to the instructor’s explanation, we saw a group of people coming from the other side of the academy’s main street.
“What the…? What is that? I see students from 1-A and even some from 2-B.” (Classmate)
One of my classmates, who had a wide network of acquaintances, noticed some familiar faces and tilted his head in confusion. The very next moment, Saxon let out a short cry.
“!! This is bad!!” (Saxon)
As if responding to Saxon’s words, the approaching group suddenly started running. At first, it was only academy students, but before long, soldiers who clearly had no affiliation with the school began joining them from the rear. While we were still confused about what was happening, they quickly surrounded us, the students of 1-C.
“What is the meaning of this!?” (Instructor)
Our instructor, who was supposed to lead our lesson, raised his voice in anger. Then, from behind the surrounding soldiers, a man who appeared to be their commanding officer stepped forward.
“What do you mean, ‘the meaning of this’? We’ve heard that elements connected to the rebel Zalard Rita are present at this academy. So, we decided to come a little earlier than planned to make sure we could secure them properly.” (Commander)
“Rebel elements…? That means…” (Instructor)
“Alright, do it.” (Commander)
The instructor began to say something, but before he could finish, the soldiers attacked us. Their target was clear. It was us, Team Catrap. As I, struggled while being overwhelmed, they blindfolded me and restrained my arms. Even then, I tried to bite at the ones attacking me, but something hard struck me from behind, and I lost consciousness…
—
“…Where am I…? Ugh… ow…” (Lux)
As I rubbed my aching head and sat up from the bed, I found myself in a small room with only a bed, a toilet, and a simple desk.
There was a tiny window near the ceiling that provided only a minimal amount of light, leaving the room dimly lit. Other than a change of clothes, there was nothing else. The gun I always carried for training, Counter, was also gone. I tried pushing the iron door, but as expected, it didn’t budge. I was completely locked in. I pounded on the door and called out, but there was no response from the other side.
“This is bad…” (Lux)
I muttered to myself. For now, the only thing I could do was sit on the bed and try to piece together what had happened.
I recalled the moment we were captured. Judging by Saxon’s reaction, the soldiers who attacked us were undoubtedly under the control of Deran Household. They even mentioned Rita-san’s name.
That means the students with them were also under Delan’s influence. But who told them that we were close to Rita-san…? I do have one person in mind. But I don’t want to believe it. I have no idea where Gellar is. Where could she be now? I don’t remember seeing her among those who attacked us. But still, was it really Geller who betrayed us?
More importantly, why did Bowman Deran Baxwal attack us? It’s true that we’re close to Rita-san and that we aren’t entirely unrelated to the ceasefire discussions. But even if Gellar was the informant, she shouldn’t have known about our involvement in the ceasefire. Why would they go so far as to treat us as a threat?
What about the others? Maria is a noble of this country. There’s no way she would be locked up in a room like this. But what about Heinz? If they don’t know he’s a noble, and they’re treating him the same way, it could turn into a diplomatic issue with Remnos… And Sonia… Sonia, is she safe? I’m really worried.
I underestimated Delan. I thought they wouldn’t pay any attention to us. If I had thought ahead a little, I should have at least had some kind of backup plan.
For example… If we were ever in danger… Who could I rely on? Who would be an ally? Would any insurance even matter? Where exactly am I? I don’t remember any rooms like this in either the new or old school buildings. If that’s the case, is this the barracks building? Or the research building? No, there’s even a possibility that we aren’t in the academy at all. How many days have passed? I regret losing consciousness.
I couldn’t organize my thoughts. My head still throbbed slightly. It seemed like I was more anxious than I thought. I kept telling myself to calm down.
I laid back down on the bed and turned over when suddenly, I heard a “clank” sound from the iron door. I immediately jumped to my feet, instinctively raising both hands in front of me. I had no idea what I could do barehanded, but if possible, I was prepared to restrain whoever came in and extract information from them.
The door slowly creaked open, revealing a small girl. As I stared in surprise, she slipped quickly into the room. It was Mitia, a staff member from the research building.
—
“Mitia!? Why are you here!?” (Lux)
I couldn’t help but raise my voice, but Mitia pressed a finger against my lips.
“Quiet. I don’t think anyone will come in, but we should be cautious. First, sit down. I’ll treat you.” (Mitia)
She guided me to sit on the bed, then said, “Excuse me,” as she reached out and gently touched the back of my head. A cool sensation spread where she touched, easing the pain slightly.
“Alright, it doesn’t seem as bad as I thought. That’s a relief… The pain should subside within a day or two.” (Mitia)
“I see. That’s right, Mitia, you’re a Combat Medic (Medica), right? You really helped me out. Thanks.” (Lux)
“It’s nothing… You went through a terrible ordeal.” (Mitia)
Having finished her treatment, Mitia sat down beside me.
“Mitia, if you’re here, then does that mean this really is the research building? Do you know what’s going on? What day is it? What happened to everyone? What about Sonia?” (Lux)
I fired off my questions in rapid succession.
Seeing my energy, she smiled faintly and said, “If you have this much strength, then you should be fine.” (Mitia)
Then, returning to a serious expression, she continued,
“I’ll explain everything I know about what’s happening.” (Mitia)
