Vengeful Mage

Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

The battles in the Battle Tournament were tough in the first round, but the second round and quarterfinals went smoothly. Yustin and Alba-san, perhaps due to becoming more accustomed to the stage, began to perform at their best and started coordinating well.

In the quarterfinals, I thought the perverted team “Beacon in the Dark Night,” consisting of Reingard and Taurus, would make it, but apparently, they forfeited just before the match. I didn’t know the full details, but I overheard a rumor that the player with black hair, black clothes, and blue eyes seemed unwell, and it led to a situation where they had no choice but to forfeit.

As for Reingard… what was that pervert all about? Could he have been someone I used to know? Even if he is, I don’t want to get involved. Sigh…

At the usual Simnon Tavern, the four of us, me, Shia, Alba-san, and Taurus, were having our usual meeting. For some reason, Yustin wasn’t here tonight. Taurus, sitting across the table from me, dramatically slumped forward. We had made it to the semifinals, and as the dark horse who had defeated Stalwart Warriors, our victory was highly anticipated. Taurus’s goal was to rise as a favorite and head straight for a harem development, but in the end, the people fawning over us were mostly me and Yustin.

“Taurus… I feel kind of bad for you.” (Lost)

I don’t know how to comfort him.

“No… it’s my fate. I shouldn’t blame you, right? I should’ve just talked to you guys from the start.” (Taurus)

“Heh, Taurus. Looks like your slack attitude and flirtatious nature are what backfired on you.” (Alba)

Alba-san, as usual, was holding her enormous chest with one arm while snickering at the man slumped beside her.

Don’t make things worse by saying that.

“What the hell, Alba-san, why don’t you comfort me with those rocket-sized breasts?” (Taurus)

Taurus lunged at Alba-san, as if to embrace her, but she quickly pushed him away.

“Gross! Don’t come near me!” (Alba)

This was a familiar exchange by now.

Honestly, those two seem like they’d be a good match.

“Hey, are you Lost, the Speed Star?” (??)

While I was watching their exchange in a daze, a well-built woman with blue skin called out to me from behind.

Here we go again.

As the Battle Tournament progressed, my fame skyrocketed. And the title I gained was “Speed Star”. Due to my quick movements and the sharp rise in popularity after my name was known, I had earned such a flashy title. I only found out about this title recently.

“Tomorrow is the semifinals, right?” (??)

“Yeah, well…” (Lost)

Since then, I had been approached by many women. Taurus glared at me with envy as he watched from the side.

“Hey, after the festival, how about a dungeon date? That mark on your cheek, you’re a demon, right?” (??)

I knew I wasn’t a demon, but I also understood that my right shoulder, with the forcibly attached magical prosthetic, made me appear as a half-demon according to managram readings.

“Demons should stick together, right?” (??)

Out of nowhere, she placed her hand on my shoulder, casually touching me.

This is the hand of a woman who has captivated many men until now! I wasn’t going to fall for it!

“Monsters, huh…” (Shia)

Shia, who was sipping tea next to him, muttered to herself and stood up.

“I’m leaving.” (Shia)

Without another word, she turned and made her way out of Simnon Tavern. At first, Shia had tried to thwart the advances of every girl who came my way, but it seemed like she had reached her limit with the constant stream of women. Recently, she’d been getting upset and leaving like this.

“Ahhh, wait, wait!” (Lost)

“Huh? Is she your girlfriend? Sorry about that!” (??)

The blue-skinned demon woman apologized lightly and walked away.

Such an irresponsible person.

I chased after Shia, but it was hard to catch up. People who are mad tend to walk fast.

On that night road…

“…?” (Lost)

I heard the sound of someone sobbing from a distance in the dark. Curious, I approached, and there, crouching and hugging their small body, was a blue-haired elf girl. It was Shia herself.

Why is she crying?

“…Shia, what’s wrong?” (Lost)

“…Huh?” (Shia)

She quickly wiped her eyes, stood up, and looked like she was about to hurriedly walk away.

“Why are you crying?” (Lost)

“It’s nothing, just my imagination.” (Shia)

“Don’t lie! I clearly saw you rubbing your face with your arms!” (Lost)

“It’s just a muscle training technique.” (Shia)

“That’s not muscle training!” (Lost)

Well, it seems she is still trying to joke about it.

“If you’re worried about something… then…” (Lost)

“It’s nothing.” (Shia)

She kept walking, so I got anxious and grabbed her arm. As a result, something fluttered down.

It was a letter. I caught a glimpse of the signature ‘Roa Randal’ at the bottom. Before I could read it, Shia quickly snatched it back.

“This is none of your business.” (Shia)

“I wasn’t going to read it, but… is Roa your father?” (Lost)

Shia’s eyes widened, then narrowed again. She looked incredibly sad. I had messed up. I had heard rumors that Shia’s parents were dead, and that they were supposedly killed by a certain magician. That had probably been a very insensitive thing to ask.

Shia quickly ran off towards her home.

…I messed up. If that letter was from her late father, then she must have been mourning for him.
I had overstepped my boundaries by mentioning it. Just saying his name might have been inconsiderate. Losing your parents is hard, especially when you have to live alone from then on.

On the 5th day of the Urban Fraternity Battle Tournament, we won the semifinals without difficulty. Our opponents were a balanced party consisting of a swordsman, an archer, and a mage. The enemy swordsman was pushed back by me in a one-on-one duel and went out of bounds. The mage had a chant-off with Yustin and was also sent out of bounds. The archer was countered by Alba-san’s shield and pushed out of bounds as well. That was how we ended up moving forward without losing.

And then, finally, the 6th day arrived, and we were ready for the finals. On the 6th day, the Battle Tournament reached its final round, and on the 7th day, the awards ceremony would take place.

The three of us stood on the teleportation magic circle platform, heading toward the battle arena, which we had now been to five times before. The cheers were louder than ever. There seemed to be more adventurers coming just for the final match today, and the stands were packed. Some people were even standing on the stairs to get a glimpse of the action.

“We’ve really made it this far.” (Lost)

“Of course. I have a reason to win, and I must win.” (Yustin)

Right, our original goal had been to get the magic tool from the Water Sage Undine-sama. We were supposed to win, claim the prize, and return it to Undine-sama. The villagers of the giant race would be saved, and Yustin would obtain the Aquaram Volga. That is the goal.

The final match actually had a time limit of two hours, which was a lot of time. Apparently, the purpose of this time was not to end the match by the clock, but to ensure both teams had enough time to resolve things properly. Because of this, we had predicted it would be a long fight.

Our opponents, the “Arel Brenner” team, consisted of one large spear user, one lean, skinny brawler, and one mage. Their team structure was similar to ours, “Dark Awakening Cheese Bread”. Arel Brenner’s previous battles had been cautious, and they hadn’t made any flashy moves. They had made it to the finals mostly through strategic wins. So, we expected them to have come up with a good strategy to take us on in the final.

The explosion-like sound echoed. Dust swirled up in the arena. Stone wall blocks were dramatically destroyed, and dust rolled toward our team.

“I am Giovanni Battista Vincenzoni, a Sixth Rank Knight of the Melpeque Church’s the Order of the Holy Knights! Such petty obstacles are truly foolish! Now that we’ve come this far, there’s no use!” (Giovanni)

The large spearman continued his destruction of the stone walls and pillars. With his large spear, he swung it around effortlessly, and with just one swing, every obstacle was destroyed, clearing the way. I couldn’t understand why he was being so reckless right from the beginning of the final match.

“What’s with that guy?” (Lost)

“The Order of the Holy Knights… they’re not adventurers?” (Alba)

“What are the Order of the Holy Knights?” (Yustin)

“As far as I know, they’re a force for the church’s charity activities…” (Lost)

Why would they need a fighting force for charity work?

Moreover, the spear Giovanni held was a thunder spear wrapped in electricity. It seemed like he had no intention of hiding.

Maybe he thought the final match would just be a contest of strength. If that’s the case, it’d be easier for us.

“Geez, getting all fired up, huh? Heh heh heh, well… I guess it doesn’t matter now that we’ve come this far.” (??)

From beside him, a thin man jumped out. He didn’t seem to have any obvious weapons.

Maybe he is a fighter, skilled in boxing or hand-to-hand combat. But with his lanky build, he doesn’t seem all that strong.

“What are you doing, Giovanni!? The enemy will know our position!” (??)

The woman wearing a mage’s robe, standing beside the thin man, yelled toward Giovanni, who was destroying obstacles with his thunder spear. The robe she wore was the same one I had seen on Yustin’s father on the first day at Banfra.

Now that I think about it, those two men are probably here too.

“Gina, oh come on, it’s fine. Our goal isn’t to win the tournament.” (??)

“Colin! But…” (??)

“Come on, let’s go all out. I’ll take down that brat from the orphanage.” (??)

From their exchange, I understood that the large thunder spear wielder was Giovanni, the thin man was Colin, and the woman in the beautiful mage’s robe was Gina.

“To say your goal isn’t to win is an insult. With such half-hearted feelings, you can’t beat other adventurer teams! I won’t allow it.” (Alba)

Alba-san, standing beside me, spoke a long-overdue piece of sound reasoning. She gripped her bastard sword tightly, holding her shield firm in front of her, staring intently at the opponent, as if ready to charge.

I asked Yustin, our commander.

“Yustin, what do we do?” (Lost)

“Now that there are no more obstacles, strategy doesn’t matter anymore! We’ll fight with our individual tactics!” (Yustin)

“Okay.” (Lost)

“———Elektriche Kugeln (Electromagnetic Bullet)!” (Yustin)

Yustin prepared a sphere of lightning magic.

“Now!” (Yustin)

Both teams had two close-range fighters and one ranged supporter. It was a contest of strength and technique.

Alba-san and I charged forward. At the same time, the enemy mage Gina began her incantation.

“———Chant Start… Eis Spear (Ice Spear)!” (Gina)

Ice crystals gathered in the air, and when they took the form of sharp spearheads, they aimed straight at us.

“Gina, that kid is said to be able to use ‘Goddess’s Miracle’. Be careful with magic.” (Giovanni)

“It doesn’t matter! We’ll respond with even more numbers!” (Gina)

“Heh, a woman with a lot of spirit.” (Colin)

The thin man, Colin, said no more and disappeared in an instant.

Disappeared? I guess I have to rely on my time control skills again.

*———Bak! …Bak! …Bak!…*

The world slowed down with each beat of my heart. Irregular blood flow accelerated my body.

I saw him. At that moment, he passed right by my side. It seemed like I wasn’t even on his radar. His only focus was on Yustin. The reason he wasn’t after victory was probably because Yustin was his target. A father named Anfan was here to get his child back. These people were his pawns.

I attacked Colin, who was running at an incredible speed. But I was deflected. Even with my time control, he was fast enough to react.

The dark horse is not us, it’s these guys. They probably made it to the finals while hiding their true abilities, but I feel like these guys are actually stronger.

Then, I felt a killing intent from behind. I turned around just as Giovanni, the large thunder spear wielder, swung his spear toward me. This was Giovanni.

The thunder spear came down.

This spear… I’ve seen it somewhere before.

———Gakin!

The spear was deflected. It was Alba-san’s shield that blocked it.

“Alba-san!?” (Lost)

“I can’t keep up with that man’s speed. Lost, it’s your turn!” (Alba)

Cool.

Giovanni, whose spear was being pressed down, smiled wickedly.

“Ho, ‘The Strength of South Barrett, huh?” (Giovanni)

“That’s right. I’m Alba South Barrett. I’ll be the strongest warrior.” (Alba)

“Ridiculous.” (Giovanni)

The sound of shields and spears clashing echoed from behind.

(TLN: POV switch)

Hearing that rumor was inevitable.

The participation in the Urban Fraternity Tournament is just a detour. The true objective is to obtain the magic tool, “Mana Ventilator (Magic Respiratory System)”, made by the Water Sage Undine, and take it from there. I ordered Giovanni Battista, Colin, and Gina, who were dispatched from the Melpeque Church’s the Order of the Holy Knights and the Mage Guild, to participate.

However, by the second day of the festival, one team of participants suddenly became famous. That team’s name was “Dark Awakening Cheese Bread”. It was a ridiculous name, but their strength was enough to defeat the tournament favorites. Rumor had it that the child Lost, who wielded extraordinary speed and sword techniques, led the team, along with a silver-haired mage who could cast rapid spells.

I knew for sure after hearing that. When I went to watch the match in person, I saw my child, commanding the team from the backline, looking quite strong.

It had been two years since he ran away from home. He had grown up well. He was much taller now, and his features were maturing. Adolescents grow fast. At that moment, I felt a little relieved. Though I regretted not being able to watch my son grow up, I was glad that he had become strong on his own. As a parent, it was disappointing that I hadn’t been able to be there for his growth, but I still felt a sense of satisfaction.

And now, my son’s team had reached the finals. As a parent, there was no greater joy. The only question now was how they would match up against my subordinates.

(TLN: POV switch)

Alba-san was fighting Giovanni the spearman, I was fighting Colin the boxer, and Yustin was battling Gina the mage. Swords clashing, magic clashing.

“As expected from the Speed Star. You’re quick and crafty!” (Colin)

Colin, while fighting me, seemed to have the time to chat.

“But how about this?” (Colin)

Immediately after, Colin surrounded his fist with light. A mass of magic energy gathered in his fist, and the speed of his punch increased. I tried to counter with my broadsword, but it shattered into pieces the moment it made contact with his punch.

“Take this! Without your weapon, you’re done!” (Colin)

But my way of fighting isn’t limited to swordsmanship. Of course, I could fight with my fists as well. Without the weapon, my body became lighter, and it only increased my battle speed.

I blocked a few of Colin’s punches with my palms and immediately delivered a full-body blow to his stomach.

“…Seriously… are you a monster?” (Colin)

After dropping him with a dropkick, I sent Colin flying out of the ring. Cheers erupted from the audience.

Looking around, it seemed like Alba-san and Yustin were still holding strong. Yustin still seemed to have some leeway. The magic spells, which required four words to cast, were being countered by Yustin with just one word, pressuring Gina the mage, who was struggling to keep up. At this rate, we could just leave them to win on their own.

I decided to run to Alba-san’s side to lend a hand.

“Alba-san, are you okay?!” (Yustin)

“I’m fine, that weapon is strong… but the person himself isn’t strong.” (Giovanni)

Giovanni, facing us, was staring at me, seemingly frozen. Rather, he was glaring.

“I had a battle with that kid over there.” (Giovanni)

“What?” (Alba)

Someone who knows me, number three?

“I believe that was during the battle with the Knights of Freedom. It was quite a delightful duel.” (Giovanni)

“What do you know about me?!” (Alba)

“…What? Your appearance, those patterns… the duel in Cyan three years ago is etched in my chest.” (Giovanni)

“So what does that mean?! Tell me more!” (Alba)

I didn’t understand what he was saying. But he knew something about my past. I wanted to find out. Giovanni gave me a puzzled look in response to my behavior.

“I see, the Speed Star ‘Lost (Amnesia)’… Hahaha, how amusing, truly laughable!” (Giovanni)

Somehow, the way he said that felt like an insult to the fool inside me.

*――Crackle crackle crackle.*

In that instant, a huge magical circle wrapped in purple lightning was created high above the arena.

“…?!” (Alba)

The giant magical circle spread across the sky, covering the entire arena. The adventurers in the audience were shouting, some screaming, some cheering, it was a mix of reactions. For a moment, I thought it was the enemy team’s magic, but Giovanni himself was also surprised, looking up at it.

“――The cage is a finite manifestation in the time of the Seven Heavens. I am the key to releasing the master’s body. Black octopus, if you follow the demonic pact, answer my will!” (Reingard)

Amidst the confusion of everyone present, someone raised both arms high into the air and loudly shouted. That person was a man clad in black clothes with long black hair. When I focused, he was chanting with a face filled with ecstatic joy.

“That is dark magic of the west.” (Yustin)

Yustin, who had rushed over, shouted. The dark magic of the west… unlike the magic of the east, which uses individual words of a chant to manifest spells, the western magic uses poetic verses. In other words, the man chanting there was definitely Reingard.

A gigantic, grotesque monster descended from above. Its blackness reminded me of the labyrinth’s G.G., but it was even bigger. Tentacles writhed and spread out, and it looked like an octopus.

“Go! Devour it all! Hehehe, my Black Octopus!!” (Reingard)

The man in the audience, raising his arms, shouted toward the black mass. His voice sounded like the scream of a deranged madman. The giant black octopus landed its heavy body in the arena.

“Dammit, the tournament is temporarily suspended! We’re taking that thing down!” (Lost)

“Hmph… It can’t be helped. We’ll get rid of the obstacle.” (Giovanni)

Giovanni agreed. He readied his thunder spear and aimed it at the Black Octopus. The adventurers in the audience, realizing the gravity of the situation, began to flee in panic.

“Alba-san, are you okay?!” (Yustin)

“……I, I… I can’t stand tentacles…” (Alba)

Now that I think about it, she was tormented by the tentacles of Sarracenia during the dungeon exploration. An unforeseen situation. Even though this was the finals, it was all being ruined.

What the hell is that guy Reingard? It’s incredibly frustrating.

A physiological sense of disgust welled up.

Giovanni, Yustin, and I, along with the enemy mage Gina, attacked the Black Octopus with our weapons. However, the enormous octopus, unreal in size, showed no sign of being affected by even the slightest attack. My sword, made from processed stone materials, managed to destroy a few of the octopus’ tentacles, but it couldn’t dissipate its main body.

“This thing… it’s too big.” (Alba)

The arena was utterly destroyed.

“Yustin! Can’t you use the portal site to send it somewhere else?!” (Lost)

“I’ve told you, I can’t ‘dig’ a portal unless I can see the destination! And there’s no way I can make a hole big enough for something this large…!” (Yustin)

While Yustin and I were having this exchange, Giovanni and Gina were also out of breath. At that moment, a chilling sense of dread washed over me. It felt like another threat was about to appear, apart from the Black Octopus.

My body froze.

I hesitantly turned around, and there stood a middle-aged mage dressed in the same robe as Gina. Silver hair and dark blue eyes. His heterochromatic eyes were staring at the Black Octopus.

Yustin, seeing him too, froze just like I did. The mage stopped near us and casually raised his left hand.

“Yuu, this is how you use magic.” (Anfan)

He said this in one sentence, and then snapped his fingers.

“―――Schwerkraft (Crush).” (Anfan)

A single phrase of magic, the same as Yustin’s. The target of the command was the Black Octopus. The octopus let out a grotesque sound and was instantly squashed flat. It was obvious it had perished.

“―――Eröffnung (Open).” (Anfan)

Immediately after, a massive hole opened in the ground, and the Black Octopus was swallowed by the darkness, disappearing without a trace. The sheer intensity of it left me unable to comprehend what had just happened. The large monster, which had been wreaking havoc just moments ago, had vanished without a trace. The arena fell silent.

A great mage. That title would certainly suit this person.

Anfan Schwarzschild, in two motions, sealed both his son’s predicament and the calamity in the arena. He raised one hand, snapped his fingers.

And with just that, he had resolved the situation.
