Long Day (4): Saxon and I

Having let Rita-san escape and snuck back to my room, I, couldn’t sleep a wink because I was worried about my younger sister, Noris. Rita-san had said that if Noris got caught, I should sell her out to negotiate, but there was no way I could do something like that.

Then, what should I do if Noris really has been captured?

I kept repeating an unanswerable question in my head.

Noticing the sky beginning to brighten, I shook my head and put on my coat. Even though Maria had taken charge, the fact that Maria managed to leave the academy was only yesterday evening. I couldn’t imagine the private soldiers of the Deran Household would leave Rita-san’s house alone for that long. Maria probably wouldn’t make it in time.

Even so… even so, if there’s even a sliver of hope, like Noris noticing something strange and escaping somewhere, feeling lost under this cold sky, I have to go.

There was still time before the castle gates open. Unable to focus on anything, I just stared out the window. Then, I glanced at my beloved gun, Counter.

If, if something happened to Noris, I’ll shoot them all. But that time is not now. First, I have to confirm the situation on the ground.

When the time came for the castle gates to open and I was about to leave the dormitory, Heinz, Ratt-kun, and Frank were waiting at the entrance.

“You’re going to Rita-san’s house, right? Let’s go together.” (Heinz)

“I really appreciate your feelings. But going out together this early in the morning would draw too much attention… That’s why I’ll go alone.” (Lux)

“… I see. We’ll stay ready to move. If anything happens, let us know for sure.” (Heinz)

“Yeah. Thanks. I’m off.” (Lux)

Seeing the three off, I left the dormitory.

As I passed by the school building’s main gate and headed toward the southern castle gate, the gate was still closed. I could hear some kind of shouting from the other side of the gate.

Maybe something had happened.

I hid myself for the time being in the grove near the training ground next to the gate.

What should I do… Should I knock on the gate and demand they open it?

Just as I was about to move, a hand reached out from behind me!

“?!” (Lux)

I had been so focused on the southern gate that I hadn’t noticed someone approaching from behind.

Suddenly, a hand covered my mouth, and my body was restrained.

“!?” (Lux)

I struggled to break free, but the grip holding me down was unexpectedly strong.

“Don’t panic. Stay quiet. Back up slowly like this.” (Saxon)

A familiar voice. I complied with the words and slowly moved backward.

Once we were a reasonable distance away from the gate, I was finally released, and I exhaled a sigh of relief.

“What’s the big idea, Saxon?! I’m in a hurry right now! I don’t have time to play around with you!” (Lux)

“You were planning to go to Noris, weren’t you? Don’t rush. Calm down.” (Saxon)

“How can I stay calm?! There’s no way I can just leave her alone!” (Lux)

Glaring at Saxon, I tried to convey my anger, but Saxon simply said, “Yeah, I get how you feel,” in a small voice, then continued.

“… So, just calm down a bit. Noris is safe. I’ve secured her. She’s staying with the Bell Household for now.” (Saxon)

Not understanding what he meant, I froze, wide-eyed.

According to Saxon, here was what happened.

The news that the Deran Household was mobilizing their private soldiers reached Saxon on the morning of the day they stormed in. Notices were sent out to military noble affiliates, instructing them not to enter the academy that day.

The Paradi Household, to which Saxon belongs, had not dispatched troops for this incident and decided to remain neutral.

“They’re probably waiting to see how things go so they can ride the coattails.” (Saxon)

Saxon said.

It seems military nobles aren’t all unified.

Saxon, already short on allies in his household, struggled to piece the situation together, but he learned that the target was Rita-san. His immediate thought was of Noris, who lived in Rita-san’s house.

Ordered by his chaperone to stay in his room and study, Saxon secretly slipped out of the house and rushed to Rita-san’s home. Fortunately, the Deran Household’s clutches hadn’t yet reached them, and he successfully got Noris out. However, taking Noris to his house wasn’t an option. If he brought her there, there was a risk she’d be handed over to the Deran Household as the girl who had been in Rita-san’s house. It would be a favor to the Deran Household.

So, Saxon ran to the Bell Household. Maria had already left for the academy, and Saxon, having no particular personal ties with the Bell Household, was worried they wouldn’t hear him out. But after some back-and-forth at the entrance, Sebas-san came out. Sebas-san, who knew Noris well, accepted her safely.

“Even the Deran Household wouldn’t break into the Bell Household without cause. I snuck out of my house, so I didn’t see Maria, but well, Maria should be fine.” (Saxon)

“… Why would you do something like this for me, Saxon…?” (Lux)

“Huh? It’s not like we’re strangers. And, well, I hate my family, but I hate Bowman Deran Baxwal even more.” (Saxon)

Saxon spat those words out, but in truth, he had moved out of concern for Noris.

I couldn’t help but throw my arms around Saxon.

“Saxon! Thank you! You’re a lifesaver!! Thank you so much!!” (Lux)

“Hey, idiot! Don’t hug me! Let go! Let go, you idiot!” (Saxon)

While Saxon hurled insults at me, all the strength drained from my body, and I slumped to the ground.
