The road to the town was a tough journey. Despite being called a highway, it seemed the path wasn’t paved, and the carriage rocked excessively. After several hours, we finally passed through the Great Forest, but there was still an awkward atmosphere lingering during the trip. The male archer from the adventurer party, perhaps trying to keep the conversation going, continued chattering about the names and histories of various places as if he were a tour guide.
This single highway that cuts through the Lucur Great Forest is called the Dwarf Highway. It is said to have been built by some dwarves who moved into the forest long ago. That means the dwarves I met earlier were probably descendants of those pioneers.
“If we pass through the forest, the town will be right there.” (??)
I was curious and peered out through a gap in the carriage’s cover, trying to get a glimpse of the outside. There, a desolate townscape stretched out, vast and wide.
“Wow, that’s huge!” (Jack)
The landscape was terrifyingly expansive for what was supposed to be a town. As far as the eye could see, buildings in earthy tones were stacked upon each other, seemingly extending all the way to the horizon. Words like “luxurious” or “stylish” would never fit. It was a shabby town, probably even with dust swirling around.
“Azarigrad, the labyrinth city. It’s a town of adventurers, with a massive labyrinth underground.” (??)
The male archer saw my reaction and gently instructed me.
“Azarigrad Labyrinth”… I feel like I’ve heard of that somewhere.
—
The adventurer party dropped me off at the entrance of the town and immediately went somewhere else. They must have been creeped out by me, and probably even more so by the fact that they didn’t know anything about me.
Come to think of it, I’m not even sure if I’m human… How old am I? Am I an adult? A child? Though I’m short, I somehow feel like an adult. There’s this vague sensation that I’ve accumulated various experiences over time. So, I probably am an adult. The clothes I wear aren’t childish either. Also, everyone I remember from the past is an adult. I don’t know anyone from my own age group. I must have been caught in a fierce battle, thrown into the sea, and hit my head so hard that my memory got wiped.
So, what should I do now? Naturally, I want to regain my memories. But I have no idea where to start. Even if I wanted to search for someone I know, I have no sense of direction here. Maybe I should look for a place to stay first… But finding an inn in this maze-like city might be quite a challenge.
“Hmm, what should I do…” (Jack)
“Well, how about we get something to eat first?” (Shia)
“…” (Jack)
When I heard the familiar voice, I turned around. A girl with blue hair and golden eyes was staring at me intently. It was a girl named Shia Randall. She was dressed in light, practical clothes, with beige tunic with a narrow leather belt holding her sleeves in place. She wore shorts and appeared to be dressed for mobility. On her small back, she carried a large bow and quiver that seemed too big for her, along with a dagger on her waist. Indeed, she looked like an adventurer.
“What about the adventurer party from earlier?” (Jack)
“They went off somewhere.” (Shia)
“Didn’t you go together?” (Jack)
“That must’ve been a misunderstanding.” (Shia)
I see. Since they had been very eager in recruiting me, I thought we were supposed to be together.
“…” (Jack)
“…” (Shia)
An awkward silence followed.
“You are name is Shia-san, right?” (Jack)
“You can just call me Shia.” (Shia)
“What about your father and mother?” (Jack)
“They’re both gone.” (Shia)
I see, I see. I seem to have casually asked an uncomfortable question.
But Shia seemed unfazed, showing no sign of sadness.
“…” (Jack)
“…” (Shia)
Another silence followed.
――Then, a growling sound broke the silence. It came from Shia’s stomach.
—
We walked deeper into the town and sat down in a shaded area. We ate the dried wild boar meat that we had received from Sylphid-sama and the dwarf clan. The juicy taste and the spices blended together, and it was incredibly delicious. I almost thought my cheeks would fall off. I realized I was hungrier than I expected, and once I started eating, I couldn’t stop.
I glanced at Shia sitting next to me. Her skin was fair, and her blue hair, draping over her sharp ears, was glossy and beautiful. Her eyes, shining a rare golden color, seemed destined to make her a beauty in the future.
“What is it?” (Shia)
“Oh, nothing.” (Jack)
After hearing my response, Shia quietly resumed eating her meat. I finished my food first and began rummaging through the other items we were given. Aside from food, the only thing I had were some coins. I absentmindedly stared at the gold coins.
Now that I think about it, I didn’t know the value of money either. The coins were roughly made for gold ones. Was it always this crude? Even without my memories, I find the shape of the money unsettling.
“That one is worth 1000 Solidos.” (Shia)
“Solidos?” (Jack)
“They’re the currency here.” (Shia)
“Hmm…” (Jack)
I have no idea what Solidos is. I don’t even know how much 1000 Solidos are worth. Damn it, I had hoped that since I remembered being an adventurer, I’d have some understanding of currency, but I have no memory of it. Not knowing the value of money makes me anxious about how I’ll manage from here on out.
“Do you really not remember anything?” (Shia)
“Yeah… Solidos is new to me. I don’t recognize this labyrinth city either. I don’t even know my origin, my species, my age… or even my name.” (Jack)
“…” (Shia)
I absentmindedly flicked a gold coin with my thumb, sending it flying straight up into the air. I watched the coin spin rapidly and float up and down in midair.
“You can easily find out your species and age.” (Shia)
“Huh?!” (Jack)
“Do you know about Managrams?” (Shia)
“Managrams…” (Jack)
――”They’re markers that measure blood and quantify or rank them.” (Lindsay)
The face of a woman with chestnut-colored hair tied into two pigtails briefly flickered in my mind.
“If you wrap it around your arm, it will display your species, age, and abilities.” (Shia)
I had heard of this.
“How do you know about that?” (Jack)
“Well, I don’t really know.” (Shia)
“Do you measure blood or something?” (Jack)
“…? Well, I don’t know.” (Shia)
Shia tilted her head. It seemed to be a habit of hers. Then, she rolled up her right sleeve and pulled out a glass-like plate wrapped around her arm.
“It’s one of the mass-produced magical tools. Want to see it in action?” (Shia)
“Is it okay for me to look?” (Jack)
“There’s no information here that would be problematic.” (Shia)
“Oh, okay.” (Jack)
Although I had some hesitation about seeing someone else’s information, I decided to take a look. I took Shia’s right hand and peered at the plate.

I stared at the strange sight for a while. Suddenly, I felt Shia’s gaze and looked up to see her blushing.
Wait, didn’t she say I could look?
“This Fairy (Human)… what does that mean?” (Jack)
“I’m a half-elf, so that’s how it’s displayed.” (Shia)
“A half-elf? Half human, half elf?” (Jack)
“Yes. My mother is an elf, and my father is human. The part in parentheses refers to my father’s lineage.” (Shia)
Earlier, she had said that her parents were gone, so it felt a bit awkward. That must mean her parents had passed away.
“If I had that, I could at least learn a bit more about myself.” (Jack)
Shaking off the awkward mood, I changed the topic back to myself.
“It’s expensive, though.” (Shia)
“How much is it?” (Jack)
“100,000 Solidos.” (Shia)
“…So, this gold coin is worth 100 pieces?” (Jack)
“That’s a lot of money.” (Shia)
I counted the Solido gold coins in the sack, and there were exactly 100 pieces.
If I buy the Managram, I’ll be penniless. Information or money.
“…” (Jack)
I hesitated.
I want to know my background, but I also need the money. For lodging and food.
“You should buy it.” (Shia)
“Why?” (Jack)
“Because you can take quests and earn money.” (Shia)
Alright, I’ll buy it. I need income. Even if I end up penniless, I can still earn money from there. Then, I should focus on productivity.
—
With Shia guiding me, we went to the tool shop and bought the Managram. The area nearby seemed to be the marketplace, bustling with adventurers. Apparently, this labyrinth city was created by adventurers who gathered here to explore the underground labyrinth.
Among the adventurers, there were regular humans, people with beast ears, horns, and tails, people with skin colors like gray or blue, and even those whose faces resembled birds, lizards, or dogs. There was a strong presence of beastmen. While there were some pure humans, it seemed like there were also Demons mixed in, but no one was hostile. This city was probably a place composed of various races.
That aside, with my heart full of anticipation, I attached the Managram to my left arm at the shop. My right arm was wrapped tightly in bandages, with strange mechanical-looking devices protruding from my wrist, so I couldn’t attach it there. The plate attached to my arm began to glow, and blue letters started to appear.

“Human (Demon), huh? Does that mean my mother was human and my father was a demon?” (Jack)
So, I’m a mixed-blood too. That explains my strange right arm. But that’s not the part that bothered me.
“11 years old!?” (Jack)
No way. That means I’m the same age as Shia here.
“Is something wrong?” (Shia)
Shia had been looking at the displayed text along with me. She was much calmer than I was.
“11 years old… I’m a child!” (Jack)
“I knew that from the start.” (Shia)
What the heck. What the heck. I had been acting like an adult just a moment ago, but now I look like a fool. It’s embarrassing. I want to crawl into a hole.
“By the way, did you remember anything from looking at these stats?” (Shia)
“…” (Jack)
I took a deep breath and looked at the Managram again.
“No, not at all. I don’t understand these abilities either.” (Jack)
“…” (Shia)
Shia shifted her gaze toward me and said this. (Shia)
“To put it plainly, you’re a monster.” (Shia)
“Huh? What did you say?” (Jack)
“You’re a monster.” (Shia)
――”A monster. A monster. A monster.”
Shia’s words echoed in my mind over and over.
Why would she say something like that to someone who’s already hurting? A monster, huh? I don’t know how I look, but I might have the appearance of a monster. My right arm is dark and has red-black markings on it. But I still have human blood. I’m still a person, so why can’t she see me as human? …But Shia didn’t seem to change her attitude. I don’t know what she’s thinking, but she kept looking at my status with a faraway gaze.
“You shouldn’t show this status to others.” (Shia)
“Why not?” (Jack)
“Think back to how those adventurers behaved earlier.” (Shia)
The adventurers who transported me in the cart. The atmosphere in the cart had been tense.
It wasn’t just awkward, it was more like an unsettling atmosphere.
Was that due to their wariness of me?
“It would be inconvenient if you end up isolated from others while trying to find out about yourself.” (Shia)
“Ah, yeah, that makes sense.” (Jack)
This girl, though she looks like a natural airhead, is actually pretty smart.
“And also, you need a name. You should come up with some name, even if it’s just a nickname.” (Shia)
“…It’s hard to decide on a name all of a sudden.” (Jack)
Normally, you’d choose your own name. Honestly, if it’s just a temporary nickname, something like John or Joe or Jack would do.
“How about Lost-san?” (Shia)
“Lost?” (Jack)
“Since you’ve lost your memories, it suits you.” (Shia)
It’s a simple idea, but since it’s a nickname, I suppose it’s fine. If someone I know sees this strange name and notices something, maybe they’ll call out to me. So, I decided to go by the name Lost from today.

TLN: I will write Jack’s name after dialogue as (Lost) after this chapter.
