Beretta and the Rodon City
Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
Led by Ratt-kun, we walked through the streets of Rodon with Princess Beretta and… a bear. No, it was General Verger.
While I don’t doubt General Verger’s skills, standing out this much can’t be ideal for a bodyguard.
People walking by would gawk at the sheer size of the man, then quickly avert their gazes and hurry past.
True, no villain would dare approach, but still.
“By the way, is having only General Verger as a bodyguard enough?” (Sonia)
Sonia voiced the concern I had been wondering about. It was Heinz who answered.
“Yeah, while Verger is the only one by her side, there are probably about 20 guards stationed nearby. See, like that guy over there.” (Heinz)
Following Heinz’s gaze, I saw a young man with his coat collar turned up and a flat cap pulled low. Now that he mentioned it, he had been nearby for a while. I hadn’t noticed until Heinz pointed it out because his presence was almost nonexistent. But Beretta-san didn’t seem bothered, so perhaps this was normal for her.
Ratt-kun had said it’d be a gourmet tour, but fortunately, it didn’t involve eating right after breakfast. We’d just eaten, after all. Until lunchtime, he planned to guide us through Rodon’s standard sightseeing course.
“How about indulging in sweets on Sweets Street for lunch?” (Ratt)
“Sweets Street? Is there such a street?” I asked, and Sonia responded with an “Ah,” as if recalling something.
“Oh, that article Ratt-kun wrote for the school paper recently, right?” (Sonia)
It seems that Todd-san’s shop, famous for its fruit tarts, was located on that street. Recently, several confectionery stores had opened on the hidden backstreet intended for nobles, forming a small sweets district. Apparently, the name “Sweets Street” was Ratt-kun’s idea.
“Since it’s a backstreet, the rent is cheap, and it’s convenient for sweet lovers who come for Todd-san’s shop.” (Ratt)
As we walked, listening to Ratt-kun’s explanation, soft snowflakes began to fall.
“Oh, snow!” (Lux)
Still unaccustomed to seeing snow, I couldn’t help but feel delighted whenever I spotted it. Seeing my reaction, Beretta-san asked,
“Lux, are you from a place with little snow?” (Beretta)
“Yeah, I’m from a southern village. I saw snow for the first time after coming here.” (Lux)
She had instructed us to act naturally, so I answered as casually as possible despite her being a princess.
“Really? The place where I live is farther north than here, so the snow is already up to our ankles. I thought there was hardly any snow here.” (Beretta)
“Is that so? I’ve never seen snow piled up before. I’d like to see it someday.” (Lux)
“Then come to my country with Heinz sometime. You’ll be welcome. Heinz, make sure to bring him, okay?” (Beretta)
Trailing behind us, Heinz replied nonchalantly,
“Yeah, yeah.” (Heinz)
“Good grief, Heinz is such a handful. I hope you’re not causing trouble for everyone like this.” (Beretta)
“Give me a break. You’re one to talk, Beretta…” (Heinz)
Just as it seemed an argument would break out in the middle of the street, Kuma-san, intervened gently yet firmly. His timing was impeccable.
“You’re very skilled at this.” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun muttered, seemingly impressed.
Having many siblings, Ratt-kun seemed to admire Verger’s ability to handle such situations smoothly.
“Are they always like this?”
I asked Kuma-san or rather General Verger, and he smiled.
“Yes, they’re the same age and both their parents’ firstborns. They were always doted on together. Seeing them sleeping in the same bed was truly adorable…” (Verger)
“General Verger! What time are you talking about?” (Heinz/Beretta)
As Kuma-san reminisces, the two of them desperately try to shut him up. Of course, with such a height difference, their efforts were futile.
While we boisterously explored the city’s landmarks, the time eventually came, and Ratt-kun announced,
“Alright, let’s head to Sweets Street.” (Ratt)
With that, we all began walking toward our destination. Heinz, looking slightly troubled, spoke to Ratt-kun.
“Ratt-kun, I’m not as fond of sweets as everyone else… I don’t dislike them, but I can’t eat much…” (Heinz)
“Oh, don’t worry. There are non-sweet options too. Besides, there’s a fun event going on there right now.” (Ratt)
“A fun event?” (Heinz)
“Yeah. Since there are many new shops, they’re offering small sample-sized sweets. You can go around collecting them and enjoy them at a nearby café afterward.” (Ratt)
“That sounds interesting.” (Lux)
“Exactly. So, if you don’t want to eat too many sweets, Heinz, you can just get a sandwich at the café. Their sandwiches are pretty good.” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun truly knows his stuff when it comes to food.
On Sweets Street, despite the cold weather, numerous young women strolled about, carrying small baskets and chatting happily.
“Those baskets are for collecting sweets as you visit the shops. Let’s start with this one.” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun said as he led us into a shop. After exchanging a few words with the shopkeeper, we were each handed one of those baskets, along with several tickets.
“Each ticket can be exchanged for one item. If you want more, you can pay for it separately.” (Ratt)
He explained as he distributed the tickets to everyone. We visited the shops one by one. Beretta-san and Sonia, particularly excited, picked out sweets while laughing and chatting. After visiting most of the shops, Ratt-kun led us to an unmarked building.
“Let’s visit just one more place.” (Ratt)
“Ratt-kun, is this really a shop?” (Sonia)
Sonia asked hesitantly. It was no surprise. The building looked like an ordinary house. Normally, a shop would have some kind of decoration. There wasn’t even a sign.
“Yup. This is actually the main event for today.” (Ratt)
Saying that, he knocked on the door and called out, “Anyone here?” before stepping inside. We exchanged glances and followed. Inside, the place was indeed a proper shop. The interior was new, and the scent of wood filled the air. It seemed to be a recently opened store.
From the back of the shop came a voice, “Coming!”
It was Holand-san, the confectioner who had been running a food stall until recently.
