Third Round (3): Intense Battle

After firing the smoke grenade into the sky, I hid in the shadow of the building’s entrance, holding my breath as I observed the enemy’s movements. I felt a sharp sensation on the back of my neck and reflexively pulled back into the building. The next moment, a paint bullet burst at the spot where I had been standing. It had to be Saras-senpai.

Since I had made an obvious move by using the smoke grenade, the enemy must have realized I was a decoy. Even so, instead of targeting the Knight (Ritter), they came for me.

Did they believe defeating me would secure their victory? If so, I’m honored, but my comrades are no slouches either. I may not be able to defeat Saras-senpai, but my goal here is simply to stall him.

Saras-senpai is skilled at a style of sniping that many snipers don’t employ, that is moving while sniping. Though his sniper rifle is slightly shorter than a regular sniper rifle, it’s still much longer than standard guns. Moving while sniping is extremely difficult.

When I faced Bianca before, she was still unfamiliar with this fighting style, so I was able to catch her off guard and win easily. But this time, it won’t be so easy. Most likely, Saras-senpai isn’t at the end of the firing line anymore. I’ll have to move and fight him.

Just as I was about to step out from the entrance, I had a bad feeling and stopped. Then, once again, a paint bullet struck the wall in the same direction and exploded.

Could it be that Saras-senpai anticipated my movement and deliberately stayed in the same spot? This is really troublesome.

I exited through the back of the building and moved to a two-story building two alleys away. I quickly ran up to the second floor and peered through the broken window. For a moment, I saw a figure running into the alley across the southern street, so I quickly took aim and looked through the scope.

I fired just before I saw the figure again. But just a split second earlier, Saras-senpai withdrew. The moment I finished shooting and pulled away from the window, a bullet came flying toward the spot I had just vacated. I heard the sound of the paint bullet bursting behind me as I rushed down the stairs.

I stepped out into the narrow back alley, and this time I slid into the building I had been in earlier. Grabbing the metal flower vase that had been placed on a table, I threw it into the street. The metallic clang was followed by the distinct “ping” of a sniper shot as the vase flew up into the air.

“Up top.” (Lux)

I muttered softly to myself, then dashed up the stairs of the building.

This building has a rooftop. I’ll fight from there for now.

I carefully opened the door to the rooftop and rolled outside, my eyes immediately searching for where Saras-senpai was. I saw a reflection from the scope on the other side.

This is bad, I’m already being targeted!

I threw myself down and hid, then immediately rolled behind the helicopter on the roof. Without taking a breath, I raised my sniper rifle and peered through the scope. For a brief moment, I locked eyes with Saras-senpai through the scope. The tense silence continued, not a moment where I could lower my guard.

I wonder how Maria and the others are doing.

(TLN: POV Switch – Sonia)

“Missed!!” (Ratt-kun)

Ratt-kun’s frustrated shout echoed from the rooftop.

He must have anticipated the rooftop attack. The students from Team Eagle, who had been advancing toward the base, avoided Ratt-kun’s shots from the roof and began entering the building where we had set up our base.

I had been hiding in the building across from them, waiting for the last student to enter. I aimed my handgun and pulled the trigger!

Got one!

I quickly left the spot. I thought they might chase me, but no one followed. They probably didn’t want to divide their forces any further.

Should I look for their Knight (Ritter) or go help Lux?

I hesitated for a moment.

I more or less knew where Lux was. He wouldn’t go down easily. Then, I should focus on my own task. Deciding to prioritize finding the base, I began heading toward the northern street. Judging from where Team Eagle had emerged, the base was likely in the northern part.

I ran cautiously but quickly down the central street and turned into an alley at a convenient spot. I cautiously peered toward the northern street, and surprisingly, I found the base almost immediately. At the far end of the passage, I saw a Heavy Trooper (Armor) deploying a shield where sandbags were stacked on the road.

That must be the base. I had expected it to be in a building or on the roof, so I was a bit surprised.

Alright, now I’ll join up with Lux, and after we drive off Saras-senpai, the two of us will go after the base.

As I was thinking this, I heard a voice behind me.

“You’re not bad for a first-year, but your ability to erase your presence is still lacking.” (???)

Before I could turn around to face the voice, I heard the sound of gunfire.

(TLN: POV Switch – Heinz)

“We have the numbers! Stay calm and take them down!” (Heinz)

I shouted behind Rick-san’s shield, as I fired my gun at the enemy team.

Lites had already been taken down by the enemy’s lancer. The lancer was defeated by Lef, but the situation was still bad. We were being pushed back heavily.

I ducked behind the shield again, tightly gripping the bullets in my hand.

The smoke grenade that Frank had handed me. It had been intended for when we made a push, but I wasn’t about to let our status as last year’s champions go to waste. Despite being outnumbered, we were still fighting at an equal level or better.

I can’t afford to hesitate.

I loaded the smoke grenade into my gun and fired it into the ground, aiming for a comeback.
