Heinz’s Return

*Today’s Journal*
Today’s journal is written with a new pen.
It’s a good one, so it’s really easy to write.
With this, it seems like making the school newspaper will go smoothly.
—
That evening, we gathered in the Newspaper Club’s room and diligently worked on creating the school newspaper. The goal of searching for the Seven Mysteries had been achieved, and we had safely obtained the manuscript of Duke Lengrad, but that didn’t mean we’d stop the newspaper, and this work was actually pretty fun.
It was the season when the chill in the air was starting to creep up. There was a stove away from the bookshelves in the room, and it was heating up the inside, but it took some time to warm the room, so everyone had gathered around a table near the stove to write articles or draw illustrations.
The ones drawing illustrations were Sonia, Frank, and Lev. Out of our members, these three were the best at drawing.
Sonia had drawn the layout of the booths during the school festival. Frank’s dexterity was shown here, as he quickly drew finely detailed realistic illustrations. On the other hand, Lev was good at cute illustrations, and each person was assigned a role based on the articles.
On the other hand, the ones good at writing articles were Ratt-kun and Maria. Ratt-kun wrote articles that were both informative and full of atmosphere, but they were all food-related. Other articles were normal. Ratt-kun’s articles had a good reputation even among the ones distributed around Rodon City. Thanks to that, I heard from the librarian that the number of newspapers to be distributed outside the school would increase a bit.
Maria wrote in a polite and easy-to-understand style, and her reputation was also good.
As expected of a famous noble’s daughter, she knew much more vocabulary than we did and was much better at writing. So, she was in charge of the main articles. It seemed she had a tutor when she was little. She must have had a tough childhood.
Rick-san, Hana and I weren’t bad at writing, but we were, well, decent at best. So, we were assigned to safer corners or sent out to gather information.
By the way, I don’t have any artistic talent.
“By the way, do you think Heinz is coming back soon?” (Ratt)
It had been 11 days since Heinz left for Remnos. He said he’d be back in about 10 days, but as of now, there was no word of his return to Lev or Lites.
“Well, there’s no point in rushing,” (Rick) replied while drawing the outline for an article.
“I wonder if he’s delayed because he’s eating something delicious in Remnos?” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun said as he continued writing his article about the good restaurants in Rodon City.
At that moment, the door to the old library, which was our clubroom, creaked open.
“I didn’t have that luxury.” (Heinz)
Heinz’s first words were a bit of a strange reply to Ratt-kun’s comment, but standing there was Heinz himself. He was holding a large bag.
“Heinz!” (??)
“Welcome back!” (??)
“How was it!?” (??)
Everyone gathered around Heinz.
“Calm down, everyone. Let’s sit down and talk.” (Heinz)
Heinz urged, and we all returned to the table we were at earlier.
After heating up the kettle on the stove, we made tea and took a break. Everyone let out a breath.
“So, when did you get back? We didn’t get any word from you at all.” (Lite)
Lite said, opening the conversation with the concern he’d been holding onto.
“Sorry about that. Sending a letter wouldn’t have changed the timing, so I just came back directly. I was in quite a hurry.” (Heinz)
Heinzsaid.
“So, how did it go?” (Maria)
Maria asked. Heinz gave a thumbs-up.
“Yeah, I delivered the manuscript to my father without any problem. After that, my father immediately contacted the ruler and sent envoys to both the Rozan and Solar principalities. The last thing I could confirm was that. Now we just wait for their response, so it’ll take some time. After I saw the envoys off, I left for the school.” (Heinz)
“Will the war end?” (Hana)
Hanaquestioned, making Heinz smile wryly.
“I don’t know. I can’t say that it’ll have an immediate effect… after all, there are the intentions of both countries involved. But I’m sure it’s not in vain. My father was really fired up and said he would get some kind of result.” (Heinz)
“Well, anyway, I’m just glad you’re safe. Welcome back, Heinz.” (Lux)
I raised my cup of tea, and everyone followed, saying “Welcome back” as they raised their cups too.
Heinz looked a little embarrassed and said, “Thank you. I’m home,” and raised his cup in turn.
“Oh, by the way, I have souvenirs for everyone. Not from me, but from my father.” (Heinz)
Heinz said that when he was telling his father about us during the process of getting the manuscript, his father told him, just before he left, to “bring something for your schoolmates”. That was when he was given the bag.
“What’s inside?” (Rick)
Rick-san leaned forward, clearly interested.
“I haven’t seen it myself, so I’m sorry if it’s something boring.” (Heinz)
“Could it be food? Let’s open it quickly!” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun jumped out of his chair and grabbed the edge of the table.
“Wait! Ratt, you’re going to spill the tea!” (Frank)
Frank warned him.
“Well, let’s open it anyway.” (Heinz)
As we opened the bag, a variety of small items popped out.
Pens, art supplies, magnifying glasses, notebooks. They were mostly things that seemed useful for school, but there were also combs and simple cooking tools. They didn’t look cheap either. It seemed like there were enough of each item for everyone.
“It’s not food, huh…” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun said, clearly disappointed.
“This is really nice,” (Rick)
Rick-san said happily.
“This pen… is it made by Meliano?” (Maria)
Maria said, holding up a pen to examine it.
“Is it famous?” (Sonia)
Sonia asked.
“Yes, well… this pen alone costs about half of our monthly salary.” (Maria)
The Oran Knights Military Academy was part of the military, so we received a salary. It wasn’t particularly high until we were actually deployed, but it was still a decent amount compared to the average income of the townspeople.
“Seriously?” (Lite)
Lite who didn’t have a very affluent lifestyle, stared at the pen in awe.
“I see… My father probably didn’t know what would be good, so he just stuffed whatever wouldn’t be a problem. But to put in one for me as well, he must have been in quite a hurry.” (Heinz)
When we looked at the remaining items, there was still one full set left. So, that was Heinz’s.
“Actually, this is really helpful. Especially a pen like this, no one in the school has one.” (Heinz)
The pens were apparently color-coded by gender. One was a deep blue, almost black, and the other was a reddish, gentle color. When we all put them in our uniform chest pockets, it looked pretty cool.
“Not bad. This.” (Frank)
Everyone nodded in agreement at Frank’s words.
—
A few days after Heinz’s return.
During the morning assembly, it was announced by Fol-sensei.
“Ah, regarding the late semester competition, it’s been decided it will be held at the end of the year, so keep that in mind.” (Fol)
He said this in his usual uninterested voice.
“Sensei, isn’t it usually held at the end of the third semester? Why the sudden change?” (Roy)
Roy-kun raised his hand and asked.
“There are various reasons. You’ll understand later. Anyway, this is a done deal. The competition will be in about a month. Make sure your teams are ready. That’s all.” (Sensei)
