In Rodon City

That day, I, Sonia, was walking alone through the streets of Rodon.

Originally, I had planned to go shopping for a winter coat with Hana, but Hana’s grandmother came down with a fever.

Hana was a big fan of her grandmother. She was even aiming to become a soldier of some kind called ninja, or so her grandmother told her. By the way, I tried inviting Lev as well, but she said that until Heinz returns, she would be mostly at home, waiting for news with Lites. Lites had said, “It’s fine, you should go out and change your mood for a bit,” but it seems like Lev wasn’t in the mood for that. There was probably loyalty involved, but I also thought she was concerned about the future of Duke Lengrad’s memoirs. I was concerned about it too.

Maria was originally supposed to go out with me, but she had an unexpected guest arrive from her family, so she tearfully canceled our plans and told me. Apparently, this person was someone she couldn’t turn away, so it couldn’t be helped. Nobles really have it tough, I thought.

So, here I was, with a sudden free day. I had dressed up and come out to the city, but it didn’t feel right to go back to the dorm and relax, so I decided to stroll around the city alone. I had promised Hana to go buy the coat another time, so there was nothing I needed to buy today. I thought I might browse for accessories at the store I found last time and then stop for tea before heading back. Just as I thought this, I saw two familiar figures ahead.

It was Rita-san and Noris-chan. They were peering into the bakery’s display window. Rita-san, with her long legs and good figure, and Noris-chan, with a soft and healing aura, made a striking pair in the street. From this angle, it almost looked like they were close sisters, even though they didn’t resemble each other much.

“Rita-san, Noris-chan!” (Sonia)

The two of them turned around with puzzled looks at the sound of my voice. After confirming it was me, Rita-san gave a light wave, and Noris-chan waved her hand vigorously.

“Hello!” (Sonia)

I said as I ran up to greet them.

“Sonia-san! Hello!” (Noris)

Noris-chan cheerfully greeted me in return. She looked as lively as ever, despite supposedly being on sick leave.

“Hey, Sonia. Are you by yourself?” (Rita)

After I explained the sudden change in plans for today, Rita-san invited me,

“If that’s the case, why don’t you come over to my place for some tea?” (Rita)

I had no particular reason to refuse. I gladly accepted the invitation.

In the end, I visited Rita-san’s house quite often. It felt like a second home in Rodon, a place where I could relax.

The delicious, freshly baked bread from the bakery, cheese, and butter. The irresistible combination was served along with tea, and I couldn’t help but gulp at the sight.

“It looks delicious, doesn’t it?” (Noris

Seeing me like this, Noris-chan said a bit amusingly, while briskly preparing the table.

Meanwhile, Rita-san sat quietly in a chair. She hummed a tune happily while gazing at the delicious bread.

“Please wait a little longer.” (Noris)

Noris-chan called out to her.

Earlier, they had looked like a pair of close sisters, but now they looked more like a mother and daughter, with Noris-chan being the mother and Rita-san the daughter.

When the preparations were finished and Noris-chan sat down, we all exchanged “Itadakimasu” (a greeting before eating), and then, eagerly took bites of bread with plenty of butter and cheese on it. The wonderful scent of the bread, the saltiness of the butter, and the flavor of the cheese blended together. It was amazing how something so simple could feel like the best feast.

“By the way, Sonia, have you had the legendary bread yet?” (Rita)

Rita-san asked, munching on the freshly baked bread.

The legendary bread… that’s the bread that Saras-senpai sold at the school festival.

“Yes, actually. The day before the school festival, Saras-senpai brought some as a treat for the newspaper club.” (Sonia)

“Eh! You ate that bread? Was it delicious?” (Noris)

Noris-chan was surprised. Even though she had been living in Rodon for less than a year, she knew about Saras-senpai’s bread.

Amazing.

We spent some time talking about Saras-senpai’s bread, and then, the conversation shifted to the school newspaper.

“I saw the newspaper too. After reading it, I went to buy some of Holland’s sweets.” (Rita)

“That was really delicious, wasn’t it? Rita-san!” (Noris)

Noris-chan spoke happily.

“Apparently, quite a few people went to Holland’s shop after seeing the newspaper. I was thanked when I met someone the other day.” (Rita)

“Really? The school newspaper has a big influence, huh? I was surprised both that the school newspaper came back, and that you guys were the ones who revived it…” (Rita)

“Rita-san, did you know about the old school newspaper?” (Sonia)

“Ah, I knew the creator, a little bit.” (Rita)

Wow. There’s a connection in an unexpected place.

“I’d like to read the new school newspapers too, but I can’t seem to get my hands on any.” (Noris)

At Noris-chan’s disappointed words,

“Oh, if you want, just let me know and I’ll bring some over for you.” (Sonia)

“Really? Thank you so much!” (Noris)

She replied happily.

And so, we chatted until the evening fell.

When I was about to leave Rita-san’s house, I thanked both Rita-san and Noris-chan, and as I was about to exit through the front door, Noris-chan approached me.

“Please take care of Onii-chan, okay? He’s usually so laid-back, I worry about him.” (Noris)

“Don’t worry about Lux. He’s surprisingly reliable.” (Sonia)

“Is that so? But, I feel like I can trust you, Sonia-san.” (Noris)

She said something sweet like that, and when I expressed my thanks honestly, Noris-chan said…

“By the way, Onii-chan probably hasn’t said anything about this, but…” (Noris)

Noris-chan then shared information about Lux that only I, from the academy, would know.

Back at the academy, I happened to see Lux coming out of the library.

Today really seemed to be a day connected to this sibling pair.

When Lux noticed me, he waved and came over.

“Hey, Sonia. Are you on your way back?” (Lux)

“Yeah. What about you?” (Sonia)

“I was just reading a book at the library.” (Lux)

Lux does like books quite a bit. Whenever he has free time, he seems to be at the library.

As I was thinking this, Lux suddenly remembered something and said…

“Oh, by the way, Sonia, how about we go to the city sometime?” (Lux)

“Why the sudden suggestion?” (Sonia)

“Well, remember we had planned to go out before, but then you had to accompany me to the mansion instead? I thought I should make it up to you by going out with you again.” (Lux)

I had completely forgotten about the last-minute cancellation, especially since so many things had happened that day, like exploring the underground. But now that I thought about it, if that’s the case…

“Yeah, well then…” (Sonia)

When I told him the day, Lux replied,

“Yeah, that works. Let’s go out that day then.” (Lux)

We made sure to confirm the date, and the two of us exchanged a firm promise.
