vs Reingard
(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
We continued walking through the wilderness for a while, heading in the direction of Dali Amor.
A tattooed boy dressed in ragged travel clothes and a barefoot girl in a robe walking beside him.
When we get to the city, I’ll have to buy shoes and other clothes for her. But come to think of it, I don’t even have any money.
“Kea, doesn’t it hurt to walk barefoot?” (Jack)
“…No.” (Kea)
“Aren’t you hungry?” (Jack)
“…No.” (Kea)
This is how the conversation has been going for a while now.
“I’ll return to the party’s hideout as soon as I figure out what to do about this arm.” (Jack)
“…” (Kea)
She didn’t respond to that. After several hours, I thought we should be able to see the city of Dali Amor soon.
—.
I felt a presence behind us. At the same time, Kea suddenly stopped walking.
“Is someone there?” (Jack)
Even after I asked, there was no response.
“Kea, did you notice?” (Jack)
“……A black boy.” (Kea)
“A black boy?” (Jack)
As I repeated Kea’s words, someone suddenly jumped out from behind the right rock. A boy dressed entirely in black, with long, glossy black bangs. He had a large bag slung across his back.
This kid… I’ve seen him somewhere before.
“You… what are you doing here…?” (Jack)
As I thought, I had met him before. My memories gradually came back. It was definitely the night of the pre-festival. He was the boy who came to the Light’s Droplet Orchestra’s waiting room. He had walked with Alisa in front of the cathedral.
What was his name again? I couldn’t quite remember.
“Umm…” (Jack)
Still, explaining the current situation to someone I know is really difficult. It would be so much easier if Goddess Kea would speak on my behalf.
“…Ah” (Kea)
As you can see, Kea is like this, so it’s not just difficult to convey things, but it’s hard to have normal communication with her. She suddenly switches into Goddess mode or just turns into an ordinary girl. The reason behind it is unclear. After a few days, I might start doubting if she really is a Goddess.
“That pattern on your face…!” (??)
My face? I can’t check in a mirror, so I didn’t know, but do I have a pattern on my face too?
“This is from a little accident… By the way, you were from the Light’s Droplet Orchestra, right?” (Jack)
“…Reingard.” (Reingard)
That’s it! I remembered. It is a rare name, so it came to me right away. I’ll have this kid guide me to the orchestra members. If I can meet Grace-san and Medna-san, maybe I can borrow some money.
“That’s right, I completely forgot. By the way, could you guide me to where the orchestra members are? I’m in a bit of a bind…” (Jack)
Reingard shot me a quick glance, and I felt as if a warning flashed across his blue eyes.
“I want to return to my party’s hideout. This girl next to me, Ke— she’s also lost.” (Jack)
Reingard didn’t respond to my explanation and just kept glaring at me. A wind swept through the wilderness. Maybe because of the season, it was a chilly breeze. It felt like the wind was a sign that Reingard was rejecting us.
“Please, I’ll explain everything in the city…” (Jack)
Just then, a sharp, unpleasant feeling like poison ran through my body.
“……Ah” (Jack)
Kea seemed to react to it too. It was some sort of barrier, and purple mana began to drift through the air. This was definitely magic.
“You are a corpse. I won’t let you get any closer to the orchestra.” (Reingard)
“Huh?” (Jack)
“I’ll bury you here–…” (Reingard)
With that, Reingard pulled something out of the bag on his back and threw the bag itself into the air. What he was holding was a large viola. It seemed like an ordinary instrument.
Is he going to suddenly start a song and performance or something?
Reingard gripped the neck of the viola with one hand and held it as if preparing to strike with it like a blunt weapon.
You shouldn’t treat your partner like that.
Just as I thought it was surrounded by purple mana, the instrument slowly began to change and turned into a bizarre battle axe.
“Wh… What!? The instrument turned into a weapon!?” (Jack)
“Here I come!” (Reingard)
Without any hesitation, Reingard lunged forward and began swinging the viola-turned-axe.
“Wait! Why are we fighting!?” (Jack)
Reingard came at me relentlessly. His movements were superb for a boy, each swing heavy and fast. I barely dodged his series of strikes. However, it wasn’t just about swinging the axe. He also used the axe as leverage to kick, showing off acrobatic kicks. I managed to avoid them, trying to read his flow of attacks.
Why am I fighting with someone I’ve barely spoken to?
“You ghost!” (Reingard)
He wasn’t even listening, so I had no choice but to fight back. I focused my mind on my right arm. As it glowed red-black, a sword hilt formed from the ground. When I drew it, just like when I escaped from the Gala Ruins, a sword appeared.
“That sword…!” (Reingard)
I parried Reingard’s horizontal swing with the emergency sword I had created. Upon contact, sparks flew, and red-black mana clashed with purple mana.
We both stepped back. Reingard’s mana dissipated, and the axe he was holding returned to being just a viola. But at the same time, the sword I had quickly conjured also turned back into dirt, crumbling into mud as it fell from my hands.
“What’s that?” (Reingard)
This is my chance.
I quickly generated another sword from the ground and drew it.
“I don’t know what you’re misunderstanding, but I won’t let you kill me!” (Jack)
I closed the distance rapidly, channeling the power of my right arm and activating the booster. With the light of the booster, I surged forward.
“F-Flare Curtain!” (Reingard)
A curtain of flames erupted between us. But I didn’t stop. I pressed on.
“Tsk–… Satan, send my servant!” (Reingard)
To counter my approach, Reingard began chanting something. The next moment, purple mana gathered on the ground, and it took the form of a dog.
–Grrr… Grrrr…
The black dog ran noiselessly toward us. I stopped walking and readied my sword to face it. However, the dog didn’t come for me, but instead charged toward Kea.
Even though Kea has the body of a girl, she is a Goddess. She should be able to handle something like that.
“Devour them!” (Reingard)
“Ah…!” (Kea)
Kea fell to her knees, holding her head, and showed no signs of resistance.
“Kea!” (Jack)
“Mu… Kea, you say?” (Reingard)
Reingard voiced a question at the distinctive name. But I ignored that. I discarded my sword and, instinctively, I gathered strength into my right arm. A bright light erupted from the wrist thrusters, and my body was pulled forward as my right hand moved at high speed.
“I won’t let you!” (Jack)
–Crack, crack.
In that instant, my vision turned red, and everything around me seemed to slow down. I moved forward through that slow space without resistance. I advanced through the frozen time. I struck the black dog created by Reingard with my right fist. Without much resistance, the black dog disintegrated into mist.
“Did… did it disappear?!” (Reingard)
Reingard showed a look of surprise for the umpteenth time.
“Kea, are you okay?!” (Jack)
“…Yeah” (Kea)
Kea seemed unharmed and gave me her usual blank stare. Her innocent face was unbearably cute. Looking over at Reingard, he was grinding his teeth, his expression filled with frustration. He attacked due to a misunderstanding, and now he had even tried to hurt Kea.
He’s not someone worth respecting.
“Kea… You mean, Goddess Kea-sama?” (Reingard)
Ah, crap. I accidentally referred to her by name.
“Kea-sama wouldn’t associate with a bandit like you!” (Jack)
Goddess Kea… This boy seems to have quite a strong faith. But it seems that faith worked against him, as Reingard doesn’t seem to believe it. Well, that’s to be expected. If someone suddenly told me that this girl was a Goddess, I wouldn’t believe it either.
“However, your magic…” (Reingard)
Reingard appeared to be questioning himself, his face full of confusion.
――――Pii———!
Suddenly, a shrill whistle rang out. Looking in the direction of the sound, a few adult soldiers on horseback were charging toward us from a distance. The hooves of the horses kicked up dust around them.
“Reingard-sama! Reingard-sama!” (Soldier)
Reingard-sama?
The soldier at the front was calling for Reingard.
“Junior-san, Junior-san!” (Kea)
At that moment, Kea, who was standing beside me, tugged at the hem of my clothes, calling out to me.
“…Run.” (Kea)
“Run?” (Jack)
“We’ll get caught here.” (Kea)
I see. This is advice from the Goddess. This is an emergency escape.
—
(TLN: POV switch)
The whistle signaling the end of the battle rang out across the wilderness. The overprotective soldiers had arrived.
“Reingard-sama! You were here!” (Soldier)
One of the soldiers ran over.
“Tsk.” (Jack)
At that moment, the demon who had once been Jack clicked his tongue, picked up the “Goddess” girl by his side, and shot something from his right arm as he fled.
“W-What about that child?!” (Soldier)
The soldiers who witnessed the scene were in a panic.
“Reingard-sama… What was that?” (Soldier)
“A new demon. It bears the demonic’s crest on its right cheek. It’s probably heading for the city. Increase security and kill it on sight.” (Reingard)
“Understood!” (Soldier)
“The girl is with it, but restrain her and capture her.” (Reingard)
“Understood!” (Soldier)
Kea Tur De Dau-sama.
It’s hard to believe, but the magic they were using… It resembled magic absorption, but rather than being absorbed, it dissipated as if it had never been there. This is similar to the miracles of the Goddess described in the sacred texts. And the monster-like speed it displayed as it approached the Braggdog… I couldn’t even track it with my eyes, and for a moment, I thought it had ‘disappeared’. A feat that no human child could accomplish. The crest on the right side of its face, and its right arm, are both distinct characteristics of a demon.
Half a year ago, on the eve of the festival, the child who suddenly appeared and called himself ‘Jack’. I clearly remember it because I felt a visceral sense of revulsion from the moment I saw him. Alisa and the rest of the band were trying to change that way of thinking, but I thought they should be eliminated. Pure children can walk the right path when guided, but that one is dangerous. There is no pure childlike glow in his eyes. Moreover, the reason for his existence is warped. He doesn’t fight to protect, but instead creates ‘results’ by fighting. This reversed nature, though similar, is not the same. It is the philosophy of a war criminal who spreads flames of war and toys with lives.
However, two weeks later, I was quickly made aware of good news. When I went with the guild leader Grace, Medna, and Alisa to check the list of missing children, we came across a request from an adventurer party. It was a search request for Jack. After reading the details, it seemed clear to anyone that he had most likely lost his life in the Gala Ruins. I thought, ‘Serves him right”. A contradiction like him, living to kill, would soon fall under the Goddess’s wrath and lose his life. It seemed the teachings were correct.
That’s what I thought.
But then, what was that child who appeared earlier? Though his appearance had changed slightly, his mannerisms and speech were the same as the Jack I met on the night of the eve of festival. Beside him was the girl called ‘Kea’, who strangely resembled Alisa. Even if the girl was truly the incarnation of a Goddess, I don’t understand why she would be with Jack, who bears the demon’s crest.
“We’ll return to Dali.” (Reingard)
“Understood.” (Soldier)
I gave orders to the soldiers and rode with them on horseback.
I need to confirm something. If we capture that girl, this mystery will be solved.
