Candidates of Mysteries (1): Four Narrowed Down Candidates
(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
The school newspaper was revived in order to collect the Seven Wonders, or more specifically, to find Duke Lengrad’s secret chamber. Although the motivation was impure, as a result, the school newspaper was successfully revived, and in a sense, it was a strange connection that we inherited the will of Slar-san.
Since we started this, I thought it would be nice to pass it down to future juniors if possible. And as expected, a lot of information came to us. The process of confirming each one and narrowing them down to candidates took more time than I had expected.
Of course, the information that was excluded from the candidates will not go to waste. I intended to introduce it as a section of the school newspaper. In any case, I excluded all new ones. I focused on stories that seem to be older than ten years ago when the old school building existed.
Among those, I became interested in a few, and after talking to the students who filled them out, we ultimately narrowed it down to four possible candidates for the Seven Mysteries.
I hope there is some information that leads to the secret room among these…
—
After school, the members of Team Catrap gathered in the clubroom of the school newspaper.
On the table where we gathered were four survey sheets.
As a result of the survey, these were the things thought to possibly be part of the old Seven Mysteries. The four contents were:
- The Room in the Old School Building That Cannot Be Opened. There was a room in the old school building that couldn’t be opened, and there was no key. However, when passing in front of it at a certain time, one could feel the presence of a person.
- The Tree of Happiness That Makes Love Come True. Literally, if one confessed under a tree with a heart mark somewhere in the school, it was said to succeed without fail.
- The Hidden Grave in the School. It seemed that the grave of the former lord is hidden somewhere within the school.
- The Hidden Treasure Buried in the Hill. When constructing the practical area, it was said that a noble secretly buried treasure on one of the hills.
All of them are common, and yet they did not seem entirely unrelated to the secret room.
“I guess we have no choice but to check them all one by one.” (Heinz)
Heinz muttered while looking at the paper, but Lev suggested.
“No, can’t we put off the buried treasure in the hill for later?” (Lev)
“Indeed, among the four, the treasure buried in the hill feels somewhat different from the previous Seven Mysteries.” (Lux)
“Moreover, it is a place that has been used extensively in training and such. Even if it were true, it would be ‘buried’. It does not seem like there would be a hidden door. We are looking for a secret room, so we would be in trouble if there isn’t a door somewhere. If there is a door and it is buried here, we certainly cannot just dig up the hill without permission, so we would be at a loss.” (Lux)
“That’s true. Well then…” (Heinz)
As Heinz was speaking, Hana raised her hand.
“If we investigate, I want to check the Tree of Happiness That Makes Love Come True, degozaru!” (Hana)
“That also does not seem to be very related to the secret room…” (Lux)
“That is not true! There might be a mechanism hidden in the heart mark, degozaru.” (Hana)
Hana insisted.
“I am not the first to suggest it, but I would like to investigate too.” (Maria)
Maria modestly agreed. The other girls are also enthusiastic.
That’s right, girls tend to like these things.
“Then, the girls can investigate that tree, right? Let’s check something else.” (Frank)
In response to Hana’s words, Frank made a constructive suggestion, and it was decided to proceed that way.
Now, which one will the boys investigate?
“For the time being, the easiest one to check seems to be the Room in the Old School Building That Cannot Be Opened,” (Rick)
Rick-san said, picking up one of the surveys.
The place we were in is precisely the old school building. Besides, since we were in the clubroom of the school newspaper, we were in a position to enter and exit the old school building without issue. We could also take our time to thoroughly check each floor over several days.
“Yeah, that sounds good.” (Lux)
I agreed with Rick’s words.
“However, right now, all the rooms are those that cannot be opened, right?” (Ratt)
As Ratt-kun pointed out, all we have was the key to the old library. When we were looking for files, we borrowed the keys to the adjacent rooms, but borrowing the keys to all the rooms would indeed seem suspicious.
“Well then, leave that to me.” (Lite)
Lite said, sounding somewhat relieved.
“Do you have a way?” I asked. (Lux)
“I told you before. The security in the old school building is lax. How do you think we managed to get in and sleep there every night?” (Lite)
“Could it be…?” (Lux)
“It takes a little skill, but there is no room in the old school building that I cannot open.” (Lite)
Lite declared proudly.
Is that something to brag about? Well, anyway, I will just turn a blind eye here. It’s not like we are going to open it for anything bad. Let’s just say that.
“Oh, I can probably open it too, so we can work together.” (Frank)
Frank also said.
Being handy can be a double-edged sword.
Thus, although everyone except for Lite and Frank felt a little guilty, we decided to try opening all the doors in the old school building. Of course, it would not be desirable to be caught by school personnel who come to retrieve equipment, so the other members will act as lookouts.
“The first floor has the most comings and goings, but I would like to focus on searching that floor.” (Heinz)
Heinz said, putting a hand to his mouth.
Given that the old school building was once the mansion of Duke Lengrad, if there is a secret room remaining in the old school building, we should assume that it was likely located ‘underground’. If that is the case, then if we imagine an entrance to the underground in the room that cannot be opened, the first floor is more likely than the upper floors. However, it is also possible that there is a hidden passage on the upper floors leading to the underground, so we need to check the second and third floors as well.
For now, we had determined a direction, but it was getting quite dark outside, so we would call it a day here.

*Today’s Diary*
We are finally reaching the stage where the remaining Seven Mysteries may finally be revealed. I do not know if there is a secret room of Duke Lengrad, but I hope it can be found.
My grandfather never talked much about the past, but I’ve recently begun to wonder whether his scars, and perhaps the absence of my parents, might have something to do with the war.
The reason is that after coming here, where students come from various regions, I’ve noticed that some students use slightly different intonations depending on their places of origin.
Among them, Hana, who is a pure Rodon child, and Rick-san, who flowed in from the northern town, use words that are very similar to those my grandfather used.
Could it be that my grandfather is from the north or that he spent a long time living in the north?
And perhaps something happened during the war, and he drifted to the southern village, which is farthest from the war, thinking he might have escaped.
All of this is just my speculation.
It is only fitting to keep such stories within this diary. Until the truth is revealed someday.
