Rebellion of Three Faiths vs the Warden Household (2)

The battle between the Baron Warden army led by Tyr and the forces of the church began.

Tyr’s army was stationed on the mountain border, determined not to let a single enemy enter their territory. Meanwhile, the vanguard of the church army, the Holy Knights, dismounted and began climbing the slopes one after another.

“Tyr-sama! They are still coming up!” (Urt)

“Throw anything you have, be it wood or stone. Don’t use bows yet. That armor probably won’t be affected much by arrows.” (Tyr)

Urt came to report to Tyr, who was observing from the mountaintop. Urt had originally been a member of the Sheeb Order dedicated to Tyr, and in this battle, many members of the Order, including Urt and Hal, were participating. Thanks to the constant flow of information from them, Tyr could understand the battlefield situation as if he were seeing it firsthand from the mountaintop.

“Tch. Those Holy Knights are wearing such fancy armor.” (Tyr)

“It’s gilded armor, isn’t it?” (Urt)

It was visible from the mountaintop. The sunlight reflected off the armor of the Holy Knights, making it sparkle. They were undoubtedly knights favored by a wealthy church, using probably very expensive weapons.

Hours later, another report came in from Urt.

“The soldiers of the church have merged. The entire army is coming up!” (Urt)

“Alright, we’ll lift the bow restriction. Let each position know. Prepare yourselves again.” (Tyr)

At Tyr’s command, the members of the order scattered to their respective positions.

In contrast to the mounted Holy Knights, the main church army, which arrived late to the battlefield, was made up of enthusiastic believers. Although their combat strength was greatly inferior to that of trained soldiers, their large numbers allowed them to overwhelm through sheer force. Unlike the Holy Knights, they were not even wearing armor, making them susceptible to attacks from arrows.

“Still, they are charging in without purpose. It seems the church has no military specialists. Let’s observe for a while longer.” (Tyr)

Tyr effectively utilized the mountain terrain to construct his positions. Even if one position fell, there was another slightly higher up. The attacking side had to be prepared for considerable casualties.

The church forces, which were merely repeating their attacks monotonously, had yet to capture even the foremost position.

“Tyr-sama. The church army is still charging in. Do you think they will keep charging until they run out of lives?” (Urt)

Urt spoke anxiously.

Although they had prepared themselves to be attacked to some extent, the fact that the enemy could not even capture the first position made Tyr increasingly concerned about their attack capabilities.

Tyr moved slightly down the mountain.

The person managing the uppermost position was the adventurer, Mia. Transporting supplies to the lower positions and bringing the injured up was a task better suited for adventurers.

“Oh! Tyr-sama. Welcome to the fifth position. I have decided to name this position the fifth. It’s the fifth position counting from the base, you know. Everyone here is a transport adventurer, but we all have a strong sense of responsibility as we face battle.” (Mia)

“Good job, Mia. How is the situation?” (Tyr)

“Yes. According to the information provided by the Sheeb Order, our army has not lost a single position yet. Fighting continues at the first position, the first base. Truly, Tyr-sama’s ability to understand the terrain is remarkable. You are fully utilizing the terrain, and no enemy soldier should be able to reach this point. I am confident that I can hold out against any number of assaults for years to come.” (Mia)

Mia spoke eloquently, as always. Tyr had previously interjected, but now he could only listen in silence. Mia would likely continue her long-winded talk until her lifespan came to an end.

“I want to go to the front line too.” (Tyr)

“What!? You mean the supreme commander is going to lead on the front line? That’s wonderful. For the soldiers fighting, what could be more honorable? Their morale will rise, and the first position will become so fortified that even a mouse couldn’t break through. The soldiers at the front line will be changing shifts soon, so let’s go together at that time.” (Mia)

Mia began organizing her tools, her excitement palpable.

While the church army relentlessly continued their attacks, Tyr’s forces rotated toward the front line. The others rested at different positions or delivered weapons to the first position at the front. Tyr descended the mountain with Mia and the new soldiers heading to the first position.

He noticed Mia’s clothing. She was mostly unprotected, with only a thick piece of cloth wrapped around her torso.

Is it really safe for her to head to the front line where arrows occasionally flew?

“Mia. Are you really okay in such light clothing?” (Tyr)

“Yes. I have never been comfortable in armor since my days as an adventurer, so I always move in this light attire to remain agile. It’s fine even if arrows come flying at me. With my keen eyesight honed against beasts, I can easily dodge them.” (Mia)

As she spoke, Mia caught an arrow that happened to fly her way with her bare hands.

“It’s impossible for me to get pierced by an arrow.” (Mia)

With the courage to behave as she normally would even on the front line and her high physical abilities, it was easy to overlook her considerable talent as she continued her long-winded talk. Even though Rishu, who was of a similar age, was a 2nd Class adventurer and had dulled his senses, Mia, at this young age, was undoubtedly a monster as a 3rd Class adventurer, as others had informed him.

The first position, now the front line, was a whirl of activity. Weapons and personnel were being supplied continuously from above, but tens of thousands of the church’s army were surging toward this small position. The roughly 2,000 defenders at the first position threw stones, dropped lumber, and shot arrows to their physical limits.

“Second team! We’ve arrived to relieve you!” (Mia)

Mia shouted, but none of the busy soldiers responded.

“Second team! We’ve arrived to relieve you!!” (Mia)

When she shouted again, they finally reacted. Hal, who had been in command, came over.

“You’re finally here! First team, second team has arrived, so switch! Don’t dawdle. The enemy is coming!” (Hal)

Hal was the commander of the first position.

Tyr had assigned her command at the front line to give her experience. Naturally, he intended to let her fight just a little, ready to pull her back if she was in danger. However, contrary to his expectations, she was continuing to fight bravely at the first position. It was a pleasant surprise to see her command abilities improve to this extent.

“Oh. Tyr-sama.” (Hal)

“Don’t mind me. I just came to see the frontline situation.” (Tyr)

Hal noticed Tyr’s presence. He had considered sending her back up, but since she was continuing to repel the enemy, he decided to let her continue commanding. Knowing that Tyr was watching, Hal seemed even more motivated, giving commands with great speed and clarity.

“Mia and the other adventurers, line up the arrows you brought over there, and stones and oil over there. The food goes inside that shed. And while you’re at it, take the injured sitting over there up.” (Hal)

“Understood! Hal, just make sure not to push yourself in front of someone you like. I wish you good fortune!” (Mia)

“W-What are you saying!? This is a battlefield!?” (Hal)

The juxtaposition of Mia’s confidence and Hal’s fluster caused a stir in the position. Everyone knew of Hal’s feelings due to Urt.

“Mia…” (Tyr)

Tyr gave a wry smile as he glared at Mia, but she had already evacuated the injured and adventurers. She had a good nature, but because of her high abilities, Tyr had no choice but to rely on her.

Good grief.

Hal hurriedly gathered the troops’ attention.

“Okay, okay! Hurry up and switch! The enemy won’t wait for you. Basically, use your bows. If you don’t have confidence hitting with arrows, throw the stones piled there. If a group is clustering together, you can roll the lumber there. Your shift for the second team is one hour. You just need to hold this position for one hour… Here they come!” (Hal)

Uooooooooh!

After a sound like rumbling earth, the soldiers of the church appeared between the trees. At a glance, there were at least 3,000. They stumbled up the slope, stepping over the bodies.

“Draw your arrows!” (Hal)

At Hal’s command, the Warden Household army of the position all drew their arrows at once.

“Not yet. Not yet. Hold them until I say… Fire!” (Hal)

2000 arrows released simultaneously from the position rained down on the church soldiers. They fell one after another, screaming as they did so.

“The real challenge begins now! Everyone, release your arrows at your own pace.” (Hal)

“Own pace?” (Tyr)

Tyr had a question about Hal’s words, indicating that they should leave it up to the soldiers, but he would soon understand.

The church soldiers continued to charge without hesitation even as their comrades were shot down right in front of them. They stepped over the bodies of their comrades who had been attacked as if nothing had happened. There was no one to help those who were struck by arrows, nor was there anyone frozen in fear. Everyone seemed to be possessed by something as they climbed toward the first position.

“Godddddd!” (??)

“Godddddd!” (??)

Voices like that could be heard from the soldiers getting closer to the position. They rushed forward while shouting the name of God, amidst the rain of arrows.

Tyr felt fear. It was slightly different from the fear when clashing with a strong enemy. It was the fear that arose when shown something he could not comprehend. The church soldiers continued their frenzied charge, leading him to think that they wanted to die. No, in fact, they did want to die. By dying for the church, the afterlife was promised. So, for them, dying was not fear, and there was no reason to be frightened as they advanced through the countless arrows.

“Fanatics.” (Tyr)

Tyr muttered in frustration as he watched the church soldiers climbed the slope and then, tumbled down, their bodies riddled with arrows.
