School Festival Preparation (2): Making the School Newspaper

*Today’s Diary*

We are reviving the school newspaper for the school festival.

As part of the procedure, first, we need to get permission from our homeroom teacher, Fol-sensei, and submit an application to the school festival committee chairperson. Unlike the stalls on the main street, the school newspaper isn’t aimed at making profits, so the permission was granted easily.

The committee chairperson suggested that since we’re at it, we could also display the school newspaper that Sura-senpai painstakingly made 10 years ago. Although we didn’t get his permission, we decided to borrow it.

The display location will be in a corner of the library in the new school building. Moreover, it’s near the entrance. Honestly, it’s not a bad spot. It’s probably because the content of the display was solid.

Additionally, since I had been borrowing the key to the old school building’s library frequently to look through the school newspaper files, I’ve become quite familiar with the librarian of the new school building. Thanks to her kindness, we were able to borrow the spare key to the old library as our workspace during the preparation period for creating the newspaper.

Everything is set. I’m starting to get excited.

The preparation period for the school festival began, and once the morning assembly and announcements were over, students with preparations scattered from the classroom.

If there were no particular plans, one could study on their own in the classroom, but since it was not a holiday, going home was not allowed. However, since many students frequently went in and out of town for shopping for stall supplies, they wouldn’t really be noticed unless something extreme happens.

We quickly gathered in the old school library, which had become a familiar place for us.

After scanning the usual faces, Lite clapped his hands and said.

“So, what should we start with?” (Lite)

“For now, we need to get the word out.” (Lev)

Lev, who didn’t show much expression and was usually quiet, conveyed her enthusiasm.

As Lev said, in order to gather information, the first thing we need to do is widely inform everyone that we are collecting information.

“So, should we just go around asking, ‘Do you know any of the Seven Mysteries?'” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun said.

“That’s too direct and suspicious. Plus, it wouldn’t work as a newspaper article.” (Frank)

Frank calmly pointed out.

“Then, how about we distribute something like a questionnaire?” (Maria)

Maria suggested.

“A questionnaire, you say?” (Lev)

“Yes, for example, we could have sections like ‘Articles we want to feature in the newspaper’: 1. The school’s best qualities, 2. The best restaurants in Rodon Town, 3. Scary stories from the school. They would fill in their answers, and we could hold a lottery for those whose articles we choose, awarding them tickets. We could announce the winners in the school newspaper on the day of the festival, encouraging them to read it… What do you think?” (Maria)

“That way, our intentions will be hidden. I like it. Let’s do it.” (Heinz)

Heinz said with an impressed look on his face, and the others agreed.

“Then, let’s start discussing the content of the questionnaire. If possible, we should create it and start distributing it today.” (Heinz)

Heinz added.

“As for how to distribute it, couldn’t we ask Fol-sensei to help?” (Sonia)

Sonia suggested.

“What do you mean?” (Heinz)

“We could have it distributed to each class during lessons. Since we’re making a newspaper to promote the school, they might be willing to help.” (Sonia)

“…True. It’s worth asking. How about the collection?” (Heinz)

“Couldn’t we ask to place a collection box in the new school library?” (Lux)

I proposed, thinking it wouldn’t be a problem.

“That’s a good idea. Let’s go with that. I’ll go ask Fol-sensei if he can help us. Can you guys think about the content of the questionnaire?” (Heinz)

Heinz said.

“Oh, I’ll go with you.” (Rick)

Rick-san stood up, and the two of them headed out to find Fol-sensei.

Then, Ratt-kun asked.

“Hey, can I fill out the questionnaire too?” (Ratt)

“You can, but we can’t give you a ticket.” (Heinz)

Heinz said, tilting his head.

“That’s fine. If there’s a section on recommending shops in town, I want to vote for Holand-san’s place.” (Ratt)

“Regardless of the questionnaire results, featuring Holland-san’s shop in the article is pretty much decided, right?” (Heinz)

Heinz said with a wry smile before heading out of the library.

After Heinz and Rick-san left, we worked on finalizing the content of the questionnaire, discussing back and forth.

“Too many questions might put people off.” (Maria)

“Yeah, 10 items should be the limit.” (Frank)

While chatting, we slowly made decisions.

“Hey, Lux.” (Sonia)

“What is it, Sonia?” (Lux)

“Don’t you think it would be fun to continue publishing the newspaper even after the festival if we gather a lot of information?” (Sonia)

I agree. Though we’re still in the preparation stages, I’m excited about this project. Sonia probably feels the same. Fortunately, we have the layout and design know-how passed down from Sura-senpai, someone we’ve never even met. It might be worth seriously considering it.

“Yeah, but let’s focus on getting the first issue out first.” (Lux)

“Yeah, you’re right.” (Sonia)

By the time it was almost noon, we had decided on the general content of the questionnaire. Just then, Heinz and Rick-san returned, so we decided to take a lunch break. While opening the sandwiches prepared by He dorm mother, we listened to Heinz and Rick-san’s report.

“Fol-sensei said he’ll help. She seemed a bit annoyed, but he said if we give him the questionnaires, he’ll arrange for them to be distributed during the morning assembly tomorrow.” (Heinz)

It seems things are going well.

As we enjoyed the sandwiches and discussed the content of the questionnaire, one of the sandwiches had a hard-baked omelet inside, and I was quite happy.

Then, Rick-san looked at me.

“Speaking of which… Earlier, I saw someone who looked like Rita-sensei from behind. Isn’t Rita-sensei participating in the northern exercises?” (Rick)

“Huh? A few days ago, she told me, ‘I’ll be away for a while, so if anything happens, Noris will visit the dorm’.” (Lux)

“Is that so… then maybe I saw wrong?” (Rick)

“Maybe her departure was just delayed?” (Lux)

“Could be. Oh, right, Fol-sensei also said…” (Rick)

We continued our lively lunchtime conversation, and after that, we completed the questionnaire and headed to the new school library together. The library had the latest printing press handed down from the military research department. This was one of the perks of a military school. After successfully printing questionnaires for all the students and remaining teachers, we carried them to Fol-sensei.

“You even printed questionnaires for the teachers, huh?” (Lux)

I said to Heinz, who was walking next to me.

“It’s just in case. The more information, the better.” (Heinz)

Heinz said, showing his true shrewdness.

Will we gather the information we need? The results will come in a couple of days.
