Melana Cave (1)

“Don’t you have to go home in the end?” (Lindsay)

“If I go home, they won’t let me inside.” (Jack)

“Isn’t that lonely?” (Lindsay)

“Not really… It’s been someone else’s house for a while.” (Jack)

Since my powerlessness was exposed, Lindsay seemed to be bringing up topics as if she was scheming to keep me from going home.

I’ve been here for three days, so it’s a bit late for that.

While we were on a walk, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Lindsay had deemed me useless.

“But I heard that your mother was worried about you, Jack.” (Lindsay)

“Yeah, but anyway, I can’t go back to that house.” (Jack)

“At least you could go to Barwitch—” (Lindsay)

“I’m weak anyway, and all I’d do is be a burden! I know that!” (Jack)

“Eh? No, I didn’t mean it like that.” (Lindsay)

Lindsay started to panic at my irritation.

“I don’t want to live just to bother others!” (Jack)

Unable to hold back, I ran away.

“Ah! Jack, wait!” (Lindsay)

I shook off Lindsay, who was trying to hold me back, and fled straight ahead without looking back. I could hear Lindsay shouting something behind me, but I didn’t care.

In the end, is power all that matters?

I didn’t know what Lindsay was plotting. But her sudden change was clearly after she saw my status. Maybe she wanted me to do something but realized I was useless, and she wanted to figure out a way to send me home since having me as a free lodger would be a hassle.

That must be it. In the end, are all people hypocrites? They pretend to be kind but have their own motives! Damn it!

After running for a while, I ended up on the outskirts of town. The area was covered in grassland with some forest nearby.

I have nothing to lose anyway. It doesn’t matter where I am.

I laid down in the grass, feeling despondent.

Now, what should I do from here…? By the way, I remember seeing a quest board in front of what looked like an outdoor vendor while walking with Lindsay. That must be the adventurer guild. Even in this rural area, it’s properly set up. If I take on quests and complete them, I might be able to make a living. I don’t know if there are any quests I can take with my low stats, but if there’s something as easy as picking up trash, it’s not impossible.

I have to find a way to survive.

Thinking that, I sat up.

For now, I decided what to do next and that was to take on a quest at the adventurer guild, complete the requests, and somehow scrape by.

If I get a chance, I’d like to join other adventurers to boost my status. Let’s go with that.

I arrived in front of what was just an unmanned stall named the adventurer guild. I looked at the quest board, but there were only two quests posted.

Are there really not many adventurers in this town?

[Quest 1]

Defeat the gargoyles lurking in the Melana Dungeon

/Reward 100,000G

[Quest 2]

Obtain the gargoyle’s gem in the Melana Dungeon

/Reward 50,000G

Both are impossible! Or rather, it’s like making it seem like there are two when there’s really just one! Isn’t there an easier quest like gathering medicinal herbs? By the way, I remember reading something in the Aldridge Household’s library. Gargoyles are monsters with bat-like wings and incredible power. They can skillfully use swords stolen from travelers.

Hmm… defeating them is impossible. But what if I could clear only quest 2? If I could sneak in and steal the gargoyle’s gem without being noticed…

I turned my gaze to the reward. With 50,000G, I could probably scrape by for a while.

By the way, I remember reading that the Melana Dungeon has only one floor. It’s not really a complicated dungeon, and it was said to be just right for beginner adventurers. If it’s an easy dungeon like that, maybe I could conquer it. Moreover, I’d just be stealing the gem without facing the enemy. That would be fine too.

Gradually, my thoughts turned optimistic. I started to convince myself that I could do it. I would later come to realize just how naive that belief was.

I asked a nearby weapon shop where the Melana Dungeon was.

At first, the weapon shop owner thought I must have misheard something and asked.

“What are you talking about, kid?” (??)

Since it would be troublesome to be pressed further, I answered, “I’m just here to pick up a friend who’s an adventurer”, and when I asked for directions, he kindly told me.

The surroundings were already tinted with the red hues of dusk. The wind stirred the orange-lit grassland, sending a chill down my spine. It was on my way to the Melana Dungeon.

“Peter! It’s almost time!” (??)

“Y-yeah!” (Peter)

I saw two travelers walking, shouting cheerfully. Both had swords at their waists. But from their height and the childishness of their voices, I realized they were still just kids around my age.

“Are you all ready? If anything happens, you’ll support me, right?” (??)

“I got it, Alan.” (Peter)

The two travelers were apparently named Alan and Peter.

Alan wore something like a red cloak, really trying to give off a hero vibe, but it didn’t suit his small stature at all.

Peter looked timid, and his build seemed just right for his age.

“Hey, who are you!” (Alan)

Noticing my gaze, Alan called out to me.

“Who are you to ask?” (Jack)

“Not knowing who I am? You’re not from around here. What’s your name?” (Alan)

“I’m… uh, yeah, I’m Jack. Are you guys Alan and Peter?” (Jack)

“Jack, huh? Well, at least you know our names, that’s good.” (Alan)

Alan nodded in satisfaction. By the way, they had just been shouting each other’s names.

“Listen and be amazed. We’re going to defeat the gargoyles in the Melana Dungeon!” (Alan)

“Eh!? The Melana Dungeon!” (Jack)

“Fuhuhuh, surprised, huh?” (Alan)

“Did you see the quest?” (Jack)

“Yeah!” (Alan)

Alan waved a quest flyer in front of me.

“Listen up. All the adults around here are cowards. No one wants to move to defeat the gargoyles.” (Alan)

“So, can you defeat the gargoyles?” (Jack)

“I’m confident in my strength! Plus, Peter here can use light magic! Look at this!” (Alan)

Of course, Alan grinned and showed off the Managram wrapped around his right arm.

He’s certainly way more reliable than me. Additionally, Peter had similar abilities, plus “Holy Magic F” That must be the light magic.

“How old are you?” (Alan)

“I’m 10 years old.” (Jack)

“Is that so? I might let you be our underling just this once!” (Alan)

How arrogant of him. But this might be an incredible opportunity? Even though I’d be at a lower status, I might still get my share of the quest rewards, and if they defeat the gargoyles, I’d get the gem plus 100,000 gold as well, totaling 150,000 gold. Even if I don’t get an equal share, I might still earn more than I would alone.

“…I understand. Boss, I’ll follow you.” (Jack)

“Good, good. You know what’s up!” (Alan)

And so, I formed a party with Alan and Peter. Even though I was just an underling, it was my first time teaming up as an adventurer.

I felt a bit happy.

“Nice to meet you, Jack. I’m Peter. Let’s do our best!” (Peter)

Timid Peter was quite polite.

“So, what can you do? Show me your Managram!” (Alan)

Prompted by Alan, I recalled.

“Right.” (Jack)

My stats were very low. I steeled myself and showed him my shabby one.

“What’s this! Bwahaha! You’re just a weakling!” (Alan)

That was quite annoying to hear. But I had to keep up appearances.

“Hey, I’m a weakling who can’t even use magic. But I’ll carry the boss’s stuff and take care of anything you need. Please take me with you.” (Jack)

“Bwahaha! You’re a pitiful one. If you say that, I’ll take you with me. Now, carry my stuff!” (Alan)

“Yes, boss.” (Jack)

I carried Alan and Peter’s bags. They were lighter than I expected.

I wonder if they live nearby?

And so, we walked toward the Melana Dungeon. The sun had set quite a bit, and the shadows of our party stretched long in the direction we were heading. It was as if the darkness of the dungeon ahead was trying to draw us in.
