Harvest Festival (2): Maria’s Proposal

After parting ways with Gellar at the Harvest Festival…

“That happened, huh…” (Lux)

I talked about what had just happened with Gellar while eating a slightly late lunch on the spread-out sheet with the members of Catrap.

“It doesn’t sound like a pleasant story.” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun said as he stuffed his face with a big sandwich and a steamed potato covered in butter.

To digress, these sweet potatoes with butter were steamed after being freshly picked.

Maybe it was because it was fresh, or maybe it was because we were hungry after a hard day’s work, but it was so delicious. The gentle sweetness wrapped in saltiness was irresistible. Not only Ratt-kun, but Maria and Frank, who are usually small eaters, also reached for it.

“Hey, I was just thinking… How about we invite Gellar to one of our gatherings?” (Sonia)

Sonia suggested, but Heinz showed some reluctance.

“Favoring someone without a reason might have unintended consequences. It’s a tricky matter.” (Heinz)

“Hmm… then, as long as we have a reason, it’s fine, right? Reason… reason…” (Hana)

Hana tilted her head to one side and crossed her arms.

“Oh!” (Maria)

Maria, who had been nibbling on a potato like a small animal, suddenly stopped and opened wide her large eyes. Her gaze shifted behind me, so I turned around instinctively to see my little sister, Noris, running toward us while waving.

“Everyone, great job today! I brought some tea!” (Noris)

Noris called out while holding up a basket with a pot inside.

She was welcomed by the members of Catrap and sat down on the sheet, taking a deep breath to catch her breath.

“Where’s Rita-san?” (Lux)

I asked.

“She went out yesterday,” (Noris)

She replied as she sat down.

After a bit of conversation that included Noris, we finally got up at the call, “Alright, time to start the afternoon work!”.

“What about you, Noris?” (Lux)

“I’m planning to help out for a bit. Maria-chan, let’s go together!” (Noris)

“Yeah, let’s go!” (Maria)

The two of them held hands and ran off.

“Be careful not to trip, degozaru!” (Hana)

Hana warned, and Sonia followed.

“Good luck, Lux and the others!” (Sonia)

Lev neatly folded the sheet and started walking.

“See you later!” (Lux)

I called out to Sonia’s back, and soon after, voices echoed all around

“Hey! Can someone help over here!?” (??)

Once again, I threw myself into the busy harvest festival activities.

“Thank you for your hard work! And thank you so much for helping us this year too!” (??)

With these words from the farmers, we were finally released as the sun began to set.

Frank was exhausted, and to be honest, it was harder than the usual training. When Frank joined us, he was out of breath and supported by Rat. Even Ratt-kun, who was supporting him, was unusually quiet, and Heinz and Rick-san were in similar states.

The only one still full of energy was Lite.

“We’re getting some good food after this, right!? If we don’t, I’m going to cause a scene!” (Lite)

He was already saying something ominous.

Well, considering he had been running around at an insane speed carrying that huge shield, it made sense. He’s a stamina monster.

Around the farm, fires were lit, and the townspeople who had finished helping were enjoying the food from the stalls.

The students of the academy, including us, who had worked the hardest today, were given special seats. As a token of thanks from the farmers, we were about to be served a feast that would fill us to the brim.

“Delicious food… delicious food…” (Ratt-kun)

Ratt-kun’s eyes are glazed over. He has to stuff something into his mouth quickly!

Ahead, near the sheet laid out for us, an older man shouted.

“We’re having an eating contest! Anyone who wants to join, come on over!” (??)

“Eating contest! Me! Me! I’ll join!” (Ratt-kun)

Suddenly, filled with energy, Ratt-kun threw Frank aside and ran off.

“Hey! No fair, Ratt! I’m joining too!” (Lite)

Lite shouted, following him. The rest of us exchanged amused smiles as we looked for Sonia and the others.

“Lux, over here!” (Sonia)

Sonia called out, and when we finally found them, we sat down, finally able to relax. Frank immediately laid down on the mat.

“Good job. Is Frank okay?” (Lux)

“I think so.” (Sonia)

Sonia replied, looking around.

“Huh? Where’s Noris?” (Lux)

“Noris went home to help prepare dinner since Rita-san will be back tonight. We’ll bring some food for you, so just relax here!” (Sonia)

Taking Sonia’s advice to heart, we decided to prioritize rest.

Even Heinz, who would usually say, “I’ll help out,” was so exhausted that he simply said, “Sorry, but please do,” and collapsed.

While the girls went to get food, an eating contest started in front of us. There were cheers from the students, townsfolk, and farmers alike. A good-natured announcer provided commentary, and from what I could hear, it seemed that both Ratt-kun and Lite were doing well in the contest.

As I lazily listened to the announcer, I heard, “Sorry to keep you waiting!” as the food we had been eagerly waiting for was brought over.

Dinner had finally arrived!

I bit into a rye bread sandwich stuffed with so many vegetables and ham that it was bursting. Without chewing much, I quickly washed it down with fruit water. The freshness of the crisp vegetables and the salty ham soaked into my sweat-drenched body. We devoured the food in silence, savoring the bounty of autumn.

Just as we had finished eating and were catching our breath, Maria spoke up

“About what we discussed at lunch…” (Maria)

“Lunch?” (Lux)

“About Gellar.” (Maria)

“Oh, is there any good solution?” (Lux)

“Actually, I was thinking, how about turning it into a noble tea party?” (Maria)

“What do you mean?” (Lux)

Maria’s idea was this, If we invited Gellar as Catrap, it might cause friction with his team, and the troublesome nobles from Class 1-A might stir up unnecessary drama. However, Maria suggested that if Saxon or Roy invited him under the pretense of wanting to speak with him as fellow knight Ritters, it would feel more natural.

Moreover, both Maria and Saxon came from the two most prestigious noble families in the academy.

If these two invited Gellar, any noble who tried to interfere would only find themselves in a precarious position. As a result, they likely wouldn’t dare interfere unless there was a significant reason. Plus, the implied backing of both families would act as a powerful deterrent.

“In fact, I’d like to hear Gellar’s story, and if we think about the future, having a good relationship with such a talented Ritter knight could be beneficial for us nobles too. What do you think?” (Maria)

I tilted my head slightly, unsure.

“I think it’s a good idea, but will Saxon agree? He did get left hanging last time.” (Lux)

At my concern, Maria and Sonia exchanged glances and smiled mischievously.

Huh? That smile seemed a bit… sinister?

“We’ll need your help, Lux, but we have a good way to convince Saxon,” (Maria)

Maria said.

Yeah, no doubt about it. That was a mischievous smile.
