Lux Catches a Cold
(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)
I caught a cold. I wonder when the last time was. Since the time I went into the mountains with my grandfather in the southern village, I have no memory of it. Even when I returned home soaked after being caught in heavy rain in the forest or mountains, I was fine. Maybe the big change in environment caused me to get tired.
Dragging my sluggish body, I told the dorm mother that I wasn’t feeling well, and then quietly returned to my room and crawled into bed. Closing my eyes, I vaguely listened to the noise outside before everyone headed to school.
After a while, I guess everyone left the dorm to go to the classroom. The dorm became rapidly quiet, and only the small sound of raindrops tapping on the window remained.
Oh, it’s raining outside. As I thought about that, I fell asleep before I knew it.
—
A light drizzle clung to my body.
Rather than saying I was getting wet, it felt more like I was getting damp. It was an uncomfortable humidity that makes me frown.
Here is… oh, the southern forest.
In front of me was the large back of someone carrying a rifle (counter) on their shoulder.
That’s right. I went into the forest with my grandfather.
“Grandfather, I can use that (Counter) now.” (Lux)
I told him with a mouth that wasn’t working properly for some reason. Slowly, he turned to face me. The familiar face with a large scar from his right cheek to his ear was gazing at me with gentle eyes. He slowly took the rifle (Counter) off his shoulder, patted my head a few times, and then carefully handed the rifle to me.
As I hugged the rifle (Counter) tightly…
“This is your… rifle, Lux. Take good care of it.” (Grandfather)
I couldn’t make out the important part of what he said and tried to ask, “What did you just say?”. But my mouth wouldn’t move properly, and no sound came out.
Frustrated, I watched as my grandfather slowly walked deeper into the forest. I desperately tried to call out to him, but my body wouldn’t move.
“~~~~!!!” (Lux)
—
“Grandfather!” (Lux)
Surprised by my own voice, I woke up.
…A dream? The room was quiet, and the sound of raindrops tapping on the window continued.
I was drenched in sweat. Just as I was about to change my shirt, I heard a knock. When I opened the door, I saw the dorm mother standing there, looking worried. She had been cleaning and heard my loud voice, so she came to check on me.
“Sorry, it seems I had a bit of a dream…” (Lux)
I explained. The dorm mother said I should have something in my stomach and offered to bring some soup from the dining hall.
Sitting on the bed, I glanced at the rifle (Counter) leaning against the edge of the desk.
What was my grandfather trying to say in that dream? Or maybe it was a memory from my childhood? Speaking of which, Lamie-senpai mentioned when we first met that this rifle (Counter) has a serial number.
At the time, I was distracted by Lamie-senpai’s eccentric behavior with her thorough inspection of the gun, I didn’t pay much attention of that. But now that I remember, it’s starting to bother me a bit. I’ll ask Lamie-senpai where the serial number is engraved next time.
As I was thinking that, the dorm mother brought me a soup filled with vegetables and tea that is supposed to be good for a cold.
“Just return the bowl when you’re feeling better.” (Dorm Mother)
She said kindly. I thanked her and took a sip of the soup. The gentle flavor was calming.
I hadn’t eaten breakfast, so I was hungrier than I thought. I finished the soup in no time. Once my stomach was satisfied, I crawled back into bed and quickly fell asleep again.
—
When I woke up again, it was already evening. I had slept too much, and my body felt a little sore. I stretched and checked my condition. The sluggishness was gone. It seemed my fever had subsided too.
“Alright.” (Lux)
I whispered to myself when there was a soft knock on the door.
“Yes.” (Lux)
I called out, and Heinz was standing at the door when I opened it.
“Oh, good. You look well.” (Heinz)
It seemed he had come to check on me out of concern.
“Did you come to visit me? Thanks. I got plenty of sleep, so I’m feeling much better.” (Lux)
“That’s good. Do you want to eat or drink something? I can bring something from the dorm mother.” (Heinz)
I appreciated Heinz’s offer, but as I was about to say, “I’m fine,” my stomach growled. Heinz laughed a little.
“If you’ve got an appetite, you’re probably okay.” (Heinz)
Since I needed to return the soup bowl, I went with Heinz to the dining hall.
The dining hall was bustling with students having a slightly late dinner. I thanked the dorm mother and returned the bowl. After receiving my dinner, I headed to the table where some students were waving at me. It was Ratt-kun and Frank.
Apparently, Heinz had arranged to meet them here.
They didn’t want to disturb me by all coming to wake me up, so they left the visit to Heinz and waited in the dining hall. I thanked both of them and sat down. Seeing how healthy I looked, the two of them were relieved. I was grateful.
While chatting about today’s classes, the four of us ate dinner together. In the middle of the meal, Frank suddenly stopped moving his fork.
“Oh yeah, I almost forgot.” (Frank)
“What?” (Lux)
I asked
“I got some information about the school’s Seven Mysteries… I think this is the fifth one.” (Frank)
He said.
