Class Competitive Exercise (3): Defense of the Northern Hill

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

“Alright, let’s get started!” (Lite)

Lite cheerfully deployed his shield.

Heinz and Lev provided cover fire from behind Lite until the enemy climbed up. They targeted those who managed to climb up.

Until then, it was mainly Ratt-kun’s turn. Since there were many targets, he relentlessly fires shells within range, even if not perfectly accurate. Especially against the Spearmen (Lancer), the height advantage iwass significant. The higher the height, the greater the range, making it possible to launch a preemptive attack.

As Ratt-kun fired continuously, two or three students who failed to dodge were eliminated. And while they were distracted by Ratt-kun’s shells…

*Bang*

*Bang*

*Bang*

Three quick shots followed.

“No way…” (??)

The three Spearmen (Lancer) from Class 1-B were left dumbfounded. They had just managed to enter the range of Lite, the only Heavy Trooper (Armor) on the frontline, hoping to turn the tide, only to find themselves taken down before realizing it. Even though they had been hiding behind their own Heavy Trooper (Armor), they were targeted the moment their formation was disrupted by Ratt-kun’s bombardment.

The Spearmen (Lancer) of Class 1-B, who had attacked the Northern Hill, was eliminated without firing a single shell, thanks to me (Lux). From the top of the hill, I exhaled softly as I peeked through the scope.

From the beginning, my targets were the three Spearmen (Lancer). Once the Lancers were dealt with, I planned to observe the situation. If any students managed to break through Heinz and the others’ defensive line, I would target them.

Currently, attacking from the base of the hill were three Heavy Trooper (Armor), nine Shooters or Raiders (Commander), and three Spearmen (Lancer). Since there were nine Shooters, they had definitely focused a lot of firepower on us.

Three Spearmen (Lancer), whom I sniped, and three Shooters, who were taken down by Ratt-kun’s shells, had been eliminated. At the moment, only three Heavy Trooper (Armor) and six Shooters remain.

Incidentally, there wasn’t a Knight (Ritter) out in the frontline taking command. Judging by the simplicity of their attacks, it was likely that Maria’s prediction was right. They weren’t very coordinated.

By the way, if I remembered correctly, the composition of Class 1-B’s forces was as follows:

  • 3 Knights (Ritter)
  • 5 Heavy Trooper (Armor)
  • 3 Spearmen (Lancer)
  • 3 Engineers (Tech)
  • 2 Scouts
  • 2 Snipers
  • 12 Shooters or Raiders (Commander)

So, the students from Class 1-B who were not currently present here are:

  • 3 Knights (Ritter)
  • 2 Heavy Trooper (Armor)
  • 3 Engineers (Tech)
  • 2 Scouts
  • 2 Snipers
  • 3 Shooters or Raiders (Commander)

The two Scouts were likely on reconnaissance, having moved away from the base. There was also a high possibility they had taken one or two Raiders (Commander) with them, preparing for a surprise attack.

Thus, on the southern hill:

  • 3 Knights (Ritter)
  • 2 Heavy Trooper (Armor)
  • 3 Engineers (Tech)
  • 2 Snipers
  • And possibly one or no Shooters or Raiders (Commander)

Their balance was poor, and if they couldn’t secure the Northern Hill where we were positioned, Class 1-B would likely face a tough situation.

While I was considering all this, I heard Hana’s voice from behind.

“They’ve arrived, degozaru!” (Hana)

When I checked behind me, as expected, I saw two Scouts and two Raiders (Commander) running up the hill.

What should I do, should I aim at them?

As I hesitated…

“Kyah!” (Sonia)

Sonia’s voice rang out, and a paintball hit her left shoulder. It was from a different direction than the Scouts or Raiders (Commander).

Damn it! There’s a Sniper too!

Quickly, I pointed my gun in the direction the shot at Sonia came from, and Maria, who was also observing.

“More to the right! Behind that tree!” (Maria)

She navigated me.

I shifted the scope as instructed and found the target! A Sniper from Class 1-B. I sniped immediately. The opponent, not expecting such a swift reaction, was easily eliminated. I, then, quickly aimed at one of the commanders and hit!

Meanwhile, Hana, protected by Rick-san, took down one of the scouts.

“Retreat!” (??)

The remaining two began to pull back.

As Maria saw the surprise attack squad retreating, she instructed Rick-san and Hana.

“I’ll keep an eye on the rear! Go assist Heinz-kun and the others!” (Maria)

The two then moved forward to engage the enemy.

As I was about to shift my attention forward, Sonia, who withdrew from the area, approached me slightly.

“Sorry, I got hit.” (Sonia)

“Sonia, you did great. Leave the rest to us.”  (Lux)

I replied. Without saying more, Sonia left.

At the frontline, Lite was gradually pressuring the enemy while descending the hill. Naturally, Heinz and Lev, who were behind him, also descended the hill. Ratt-kun, who had fallen behind, continued to leisurely fire shells, but suddenly, the bombardment stopped.

“Sorry! I’m out of mana! I need to rest for a bit! I’m pulling back!” (Ratt)

He said while running toward us, and then, he switched with Rick-san and Hana.

Seizing that moment, Class 1-B’s Shooters increased their offensive. I saw Heinz being targeted in a brief opening. Sensing danger, I raised my gun (Counter), but Lev quickly pulled Heinz towards himself.

Heinz narrowly avoided being hit, but immediately after, Lev raised his hand and lowered his gun. It was a sign that he had been hit. It seemed he had been shot while saving Heinz.

After Lev was taken out, Lite began to gradually retreat while protecting Heinz.

Looking closely, I noticed that while we were dealing with the surprise attack squad, they had managed to take down two of Class 1-B’s Shooters. The remaining enemies were three Heavy Trooper (Armor) and four Shooters.

With Rick-san joining us, our side had two Heavy Trooper (Armor), Heinz, Hana, and me as the reserve. Ratt-kun wouldn’t be able to fire for a while, so we couldn’t target the Heavy Trooper (Armor). However, Class 1-B’s forces were also finding it difficult to push through with sheer strength. Both sides exchanged sporadic shots, leading to a temporary standoff.

The balance shifted shortly after when noise started coming from the southern hill. Class 1-B’s Knights (Ritter) were being targeted all at once! The remaining students of Class 1-B panicked and began to retreat, rushing to reinforce their base. Once Class 1-B’s forces were completely out of range, we gathered together, taking a deep breath as we praised each other for our efforts.

In the end, including the surprise attack squad, the number of enemies we took down in the defense of the hill was:

  • 3 Spearmen (Lancer)
  • 6 Shooters
  • 1 Sniper
  • 1 Scout

On our side, only Sonia and Lev were taken out, so it was a significant achievement, even from an objective standpoint. I personally sniped 3 Spearmen (Lancer), 1 Sniper, and 1 Shooter, but even without that, it was a great result for the team.

While taking a breather and rehydrating, I noticed a unit emerging from the eastern forest. It was Roy-kun’s Blue Shell. They were being chased by Class 1-A. We rushed to provide support. Only three members of Blue Shell were left. Class 1-A didn’t seem intent on pursuing them further and retreated after noticing our reinforcements. Under the protection of Heinz and Lite, Blue Shell regrouped and moved up the hill.

“Roy-kun, are you alright?” (Lux)

As I handed Roy-kun a drink prepared by Frank, I asked him sympathetically.

After gulping it down, Roy-kun finally looked somewhat relieved and said with a wry smile.

“Man, that was rough.” (Roy)

“Saxon? Did he get taken out?” (Lite)

Lite asked, to which Roy-kun shook his head.

“Saxon? He’s attacking over there now.” (Roy)

Roy-kun said, pointing toward the southern hill.
