Ally has Appeared

It hass been exactly six months since the delegation of Saintess Christia and Holy Knight Carla departed from the kingdom to return to the Holy Kingdom. Which means, less than two years remain before the main events of ‘Engage Hazard’ begin.
“Your Highness Harold, there is no one more suitable for this role than you. Please, I humbly ask that you accept it.” (Olson)
And here I am, starting my morning with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Count Robert Olson, bowing his head in front of me. His request? He wants me to lead a goodwill mission to the Capetien Kingdom, one of the great powers of this world.
Now, the relationship between the Dehaubalz Kingdom and the Capetien Kingdom has always been contentious. For the past 300 years, we’ve been at each other’s throats, engaging in countless wars. While things have been peaceful recently, the tension remains, like a ticking time bomb ready to go off at any moment. In Enhaz, the plot involves certain people conspiring to provoke a war, bringing both kingdoms to the brink of conflict. The protagonist Wilfred, along with the heroines, steps in to avert the war.
Now that I think about it, though, it’s kind of ridiculous how many crises happen around the protagonist. And the fact that they expect a 16-year-old to deal with it all is just… too much. Come on, adults should step up a bit more, right? Well, in this world, you’re considered an adult at 15, so technically he is an adult. In my previous life, he’d just be a high school student.
“No, as I’ve said many times, it’s impossible for me! I could never handle such a big responsibility!” (Harold)
“No! Precisely because it is the Capetien Kingdom, with whom we share a bitter history, there is no other prince who can fulfill this role but you, Your Highness Harold!” (Olson)
Even though I’m doing my best to decline, Olson keeps pressing me with his desperate plea. The reason he’s so eager to push this job on me is because, as it turns out, he’s plotting to support me as the next king. Why would he want to back someone like me, the so-called ‘incompetent bratty prince’? Well, apparently, Olson has greatly overestimated me after seeing my performance as the host for the Holy Kingdom envoy.
I mean, I did my best not to cause any trouble and tried to handle things within my abilities, remembering my time as a school festival committee member in my previous life. Maybe I was a little more motivated than usual, sure. But still, just because of that, does he really need to reevaluate me so drastically? It’s not like I’m not happy about it, but… this is a bit much.
“To put it bluntly, His Highness Cardis has a rather high opinion of himself and tends to look down on others. His Highness Raphael is not like that, but he is somewhat suspicious of people, which could lead to unexpected problems in negotiations with the Capetien Kingdom.” (Olson)
“…” (Harold)
“As for His Highness Wilfred, while the King has publicly praised him, the nobles, especially the bureaucrats, have an extremely poor opinion of him. Many officials have even said they would resign if he were to be appointed as ambassador.” (Olson)
… Sadly, Olson’s evaluation of them is mostly spot-on. Cardis and Raphael’s issues were even pointed out in Enhaz, and the protagonist helped smooth things over, which led to both of them supporting him in the end.
As for Wilfred, well… you know the story. When he was hosting the Holy Kingdom envoy, he gave out orders without any regard for his subordinates and took all the credit. No wonder the bureaucrats don’t want to work with him.
“But, even so, I’m called the ‘incompetent bratty prince’. My reputation is terrible. During the Holy Kingdom envoy’s visit, I left almost everything to you, Your Excellency Olson, and the bureaucrats, and during the kidnapping attempt of the Saintess, I didn’t do anything.” (Harold)
“Yes, exactly. You entrusted us with the work, showing us trust and supporting us in times of need without interfering unnecessarily. The bureaucrats have all said they want to continue working with you, Your Highness Harold. And of course, I feel the same way.” (Olson)
Even though I’m explaining why I’m unqualified, Olson smiles at me with a bright, beaming expression as he says this. What am I supposed to do?
“Furthermore, both His Majesty the King and His Excellency the Prime Minister have already given their approval for this mission. All that remains is for you, Your Highness Harold, to agree.” (Olson)
Oh, I see, the groundwork has already been laid. What a competent and resourceful Foreign Affairs Minister we have. The kingdom is safe in his hands.
“Sigh… Well, in that case, I don’t really have a choice, do I?” (Harold)
“Oh no, it’s not that you don’t have a choice…” (Olson)
Damn it. I’ve been completely cornered. But, if even someone like me, the ‘incompetent bratty prince’, is being relied on this much… Then I guess I have no choice but to do it. And besides, it’s not a bad deal for me either. I’ve decided to fight against Wilfred, the protagonist of Engage Hazard. That is to protect what’s important to me.
“… Alright. I accept the mission.” (Harold)
“Thank you very much! I assure you, Your Highness Harold, that we will fully support you. We will do everything in our power to ensure your stay in the Capetien Kingdom is comfortable!” (Olson)
As Olson grasped my hands with a joyful smile, I couldn’t help but let out a small, wry smile of my own.
