Latter Days of Summer Vacation (3): End of Summer Vacation

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

When Rick-san and I headed to the back of the school building, the suspicious pair was still in the same place. They were talking about something. I kept Rick-san behind me and peered from the corner of the building.

The pair were a man and a woman. Although the distance made it hard to be certain, they appeared to be about the same age as me. Both were carefully watching their surroundings while talking. It seemed likely that they would notice if we got any closer. However, they showed no signs of entering the forest or heading towards the research building, instead looking around and searching for something.

After a while, when the rain had completely stopped, the two walked to the former courtyard west of the old school building, now used as a materials storage area. After their figures disappeared completely into the shadow of the old school building, I conveyed the situation to Rick-san.

“What should we do?” (Lux)

“Hmmm, if we approach now, do you think they’ll notice us?” (Rick)

In response to Rick-san’s question, I said.

“I think the possibility is high.” (Lux)

Although we didn’t know their skill level, their wariness was clear. If we chased them, a confrontation could easily happen. Rick-san hesitated a bit and said.

“Lux-kun, it’s unfortunate, but should we stop here? Since we don’t know if they have weapons, I think the risk is higher.” (Rick)

I agreed with Rick-san’s suggestion.

“Yeah. For now, let’s inform the instructor.” (Lux)

“Okay then, I’ll lock up the old school building, so Lux-kun, could you catch an available instructor and tell them what happened?” (Rick)

“Understood. The pair might still sneak into the old school building. Please be careful.” (Lux)

“Ah, if we do run into them, I’ll throw away the keys and run away.” (Rick)

Rick-san said with a smile as we parted ways, and I ran off to find an instructor.

“…So that’s what happened.” (Lux)

At night, while having dinner with Heinz in the dormitory cafeteria, I explained what happened today. Afterwards, I explained the situation to an instructor and asked for increased security around the research building, but I didn’t know if the pair was caught after that.

Heinz, after listening to my story, showed a range of expressions, from surprise to concern, and sighed deeply.

“I should have gone too.” (Heinz)

“Well, even if you said that, Heinz, you were impossible today! You said you were going to sleep and didn’t wake up.” (Lux)

“Well, that’s true, but… anyway, let’s go check out the old school building’s school newspaper soon! Tomorrow… oh, by the way, weren’t Ratt and Frank coming back around tomorrow? If so, let’s all go the day after tomorrow or the day after that.” (Heinz)

I agreed with Heinz’s suggestion.

“Yeah, that sounds good.” (Lux)

With only 5 days left of summer vacation, the students who had gone home for the break were starting to return one after another. According to the dorm mother, they all generally came back in a big wave about 3–4 days before the end of the vacation, and she laughed that the quiet days would be over after today.

“Yeah. Well, I’ll let Sonia know tomorrow. Maria might come back too.” (Lux)

Therefore, the tentative plan was set for two days later.

The next day, around noon, the dorm began to regain its liveliness all at once.

“It’s quite a tan, Lux-kun. And you too, Heinz.” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun, who had just returned, said so.

“Ratt-kun, you’re tanned too. Did you go somewhere?” (Lux)

I asked, noticing Ratt-kun’s tan. It seemed Ratt-kun had gone camping with his family.

While we were having that conversation, students who had been home for the break continued to return, and the dorm entrance was like a festival.

Indeed, as the dorm mother had said, farewell to the peaceful days.

Meanwhile, Frank also returned.

“Hey, how’ve you been?” (Frank)

Frank, who was his usual self, hadn’t changed much in mood, and surprisingly… he was not tanned at all.

“Frank, you’re not tanned again.” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun remarked.

“Well, of course. I stayed at home the whole time.” (Frank)

I see, even when Frank went back home, he was truly Frank.

While Ratt-kun and Frank went back to their rooms to drop off their luggage, Sonia popped her head in. I had already informed Sonia about the old school building library earlier in the morning.

“Lux, Maria is also coming back today. I asked the person looking after the house to relay the message. Also, I told Hana, and she said she has no errands.” (Sonia)

“Okay, then let’s gather in the courtyard tomorrow.” (Lux)

“Yeah, see you then!” (Sonia)

With just that, Sonia went back to the girls’ dormitory.

“Lux, let’s have lunch first. Let’s save a seat and wait for Ratt-kun and Frank.” (Heinz)

Invited by Heinz, my stomach also growled. As I thought about how to spend the day, we headed to the dining hall.

And the day after that.

Team Catrap finally gathered together for the first time in a while. As we made our way to the old school building, we talked about the school newspaper and the suspicious individuals we had seen, and soon enough, we arrived at the old school building.

We had borrowed the keys for today as well, and the weather was nice. The old school library, which had been dim last time, would surely be sufficiently bright today. The keys to the old school were unlocked, and it seemed like someone was taking out materials or something. Even here, the end of summer vacation and the footsteps of daily life could be felt.

We headed straight to the library and unlocked the door.

“It has a certain atmosphere.” (Sonia)

Sonia said.

Since it was everyone’s first time entering, they all seemed to have similar thoughts, looking around the room curiously.

“So, where is the school newspaper?” (Frank)

Frank asked, and Rick and I took the lead.

“This way.” (Lux)

I led everyone to the place where the school newspapers were supposed to be. In the corner of the bookshelf where 12 files had been crammed in. There was a gaping empty space where the 12 volumes should have been.
