I was deep in thought, arms crossed, completely ignoring today’s usual boring lecture. Naturally, my thoughts were about my beloved sister and her fiancé, His Highness Harold.

Since enrolling in the Royal Academy, this was the first time Alexandra had contacted me, and said ‘I want to see you, Onii-sama’. I had ditched all my classes and returned to our townhouse in the royal capital, only to be met with a request to take in Prince Harold as an adopted son-in-law. It made my head spin.

Granted, it’s not unheard of for His Highness Harold, the Third Prince, to be married into another royal family or a noble family that lacks a male heir. However, the House of Duke Chevalier already has me as a legitimate heir, so there’s no need to take Harold in as a son-in-law. Above all, why should we accept the so-called ‘incompetent bratty prince’ who intends to steal away and monopolize the one and only flower of the Chevalier Household?

And then, during last night’s dinner with Alexandra, I learned about Prince Harold’s current situation in the royal palace. It was no surprise that his already poor reputation made his standing within the palace unfavorable.

However, what astonished me was that he had recently distanced himself from His Highness Cardis, whom he had previously followed almost subserviently. The fact that His Highness Cardis was the cause of this split was even more shocking.

His Highness Cardis had incorporated that ‘tainted prince’ into his faction, making him his right hand.

This ‘tainted prince’ was the fourth prince, born of a mere baron’s daughter who dared to claim royal succession rights, thereby becoming an illegitimate child. While one could sympathize with his background and circumstances, as the largest faction in the kingdom, the House of Duke Chevalier could not afford to extend our ‘dragon’s favor’ to such a figure.

“Cedric, what is troubling you?” (Cardis)

His Highness Cardis looked at me with curiosity. Apparently, the lecture had already ended.
