Interclass Competition (4): Another Conclusion

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

While I was extracting a confession from Zess, Lamie-senpai, who had been standing silently behind the instructors, was now drawing everyone’s attention. With her arms crossed, she stood there with an imposing presence, embodying the very essence of nobility.

“Lavitomivia-san, what is this about?” (??)

The lead instructor turned to face Lamie-senpai and asked

It seemed that the instructor referred to her as Lavitomivia.

Impressive that they don’t trip over the name.

“Yes. The person named Zess over there is suspected of stealing and unauthorized use of the Sniper club’s reserve rifles. The question that Lux asked was part of the investigation I requested.” (Lamie)

After saying this, Lamie-senpai briefly glanced at me with a look that seemed to say, “Well done”.

I was called by Lamie-senpai on the evening before the rivalry match. It was the day before yesterday.

While finalizing strategies with Heinz and Maria, Legg, a fellow sniper from 1-C, approached with a blank expression and said…

“Lux, Lavitomivia-senpai is calling for you at the military building.” (Legg)

Then, he went off somewhere.

Legg isn’t in a bad mood. He’s just always like that. He doesn’t say more than necessary and doesn’t engage in unnecessary familiarity. However, he seems to be quite relaxed around Roy-kun from the Knight Circle.

Anyway, I responded to Lamie-senpai’s call, entrusted the rest to Heinz and the others, and hurried to the military building. Even though it was evening when I left the school building, it was still quite bright and warm. Coming from the south, I had expected the northern town to be colder, but I was pleasantly surprised by the consistent summer warmth.

The military building was a bit of a distance from the school building, so by the time I reached the Sniper Club’s small room with my beloved rifle, I was sweating a little.

As I stood in front of the small room in the Sniper Club where Lamie-senpai was, I knocked softly.

“Come in.” (Saras)

Came the voice of the vice-circle leader, Saras-senpai.

“Excuse me.”  (Lux)

I said as I entered, finding Saras-senpai and Lamie-senpai waiting inside.

“Lux, sorry for the sudden request.” (Saras)

Saras-senpai said while offering me a seat. After I thanked her and sat down, she began preparing tea. As I stood up to help, Lamie-senpai, who had her hands resting on her chin, spoke up.

“I’ve gathered some evidence regarding the recent theft of the reserve rifles.” (Lamie)

“Is that so? Then, does that mean the knight from 2-C is the culprit?” (Lux)

“There is almost no mistake, but I want to be thorough.” (Lamie)

“Uh…” (Lux)

“To be specific, I want to get a statement from the person in a place where they cannot evade it.” (Lamie)

“Huh…? Oh. Thank you.” (Lux)

I took the tea that Saras-senpai had prepared while thinking to myself that I was a bit of an idiot.

“By the way, you’ll be facing the team led by that Knight (Ritter) the day after tomorrow, right?” (Lamie)

“Yes, that’s right.” (Lux)

I had mentioned to them that the team we were going to face was the same one as the missing spare gun.

“They’re senior, but do you think you can win?” (Lamie)

Lamie-senpai threw the question with a challenging look.

“Yes. Probably, but we will win.” (Lux)

I stated clearly. Considering the result of the practice match, the opponents were underestimating us, and I had prepared a solid strategy for that.

If we are well-prepared, it’s the same as hunting. I think we have a good chance of winning.

“Hmm, you do say. You’re quite interesting.” (Saras)

Saras-senpai said as she placed the cups of tea for herself and Lamie-senpai while looking pleased.

“The opponent has been receiving military training at this school for a year. And you’re basically making your debut. Do you have any basis for your confidence?” (Lamie)

Lamie-senpai looked at me seriously.

I thought for a moment and replied…

“Even though it’s a practice match, it’s still war. Information warfare and terrain warfare are also part of it. Those who prepare to gain an advantage will win.” (Lux)

Borrowing Fol-sensei’s words, I conveyed it like that. Lamie-senpai, with her hawk-like sharp eyes arched and made a somewhat intimidating smile.

“Then, I believe you. I have something to ask of you. Of course, if you succeed, there will be a little reward as well. Please cooperate.” (Lamie)

She started to talk about the strategy to corner the gun thief and the person who bullied the cat, without waiting for my response.

Lamie-senpai volunteered to be the commentator with the voice amplification stone for our match, to be be able to witness this occasion. And now, with Lamie-senpai having obtained a confession from Zess that he had hidden the stolen gun, the floor was hers.

She explained the gun theft incident in a logical and organized manner, and the instructors listened silently. Along the way, she also conveyed that Zess had acted against chivalric spirit by using a gun to target a cat, which was a clear violation of knightly principles. Additionally, facts that were new to me were presented, and evidence that Zess was the culprit was rapidly accumulated from various angles. As Lamie-senpai spoke, Zess’s face alternated between pale and flushed. When Lamie-senpai finished her explanation, the instructors’ cold gazes pierced through Zess.

“Th… This is a misunderstanding! I was in that room that day because… yes, I was called by someone! I was set up!” (Zess)

He began making a lame excuse.

“Zess, you are from the Som Household. If this continues, it will also tarnish your household’s name. Are you sure you want that?” (Lamie)

Lamie-senpai said flatly.

“If I said I don’t know, then I don’t know!” (Zess)

As Zess shouted and stepped back, Lamie-senpai took a step forward.

“The Sniper from your team who dropped out two months ago is currently being detained by us.”

When Lamie-senpai conveyed that final piece of information, Zess crumbled to his knees.

The training at the military academy was harsh. As one progresses to higher grades, there were always a few who couldn’t endure the training or realize their lack of skill and drop out. The sniper who was on Zess’s team was one such person. Zess used his noble household’s power and money to have that student steal the spare guns from the military building before dropping out. It seems he thought of it as a small thrill to escape his mundane daily life. A completely unsympathetic reason.

It seemed he thought that once the dropout Sniper left the city, he would not be found by anyone. However, Lamie-senpai and her team were not fools. They had already set their sights on the dropout Sniper early on.

Using their own noble power, they managed to track down the person who stole the gun, captured him, and brought him in. The captured former student Sniper had confessed to the entire crime. However, since there was a possibility that Zess might insist that such testimony was false, they wanted to create a situation where he couldn’t escape the truth from the person’s own mouth.

After watching Zess being dragged away while his arms were bound by the instructors, Lamie-senpai turned to face us.

“Congratulations on Team Catrap’s first victory. Lux, you should come to the military building later. I’ll give you the promised reward.” (Lamie)

“If Zess has been caught, then there’s no need for…” (Lux)

I tried to decline, but Lamie-senpai interrupted me midway.

“Is that so? However, this is a voucher for Todd’s store, rumored to be the best confectionery store in Rodon City. Of course, it’s enough for the whole team to share. Are you really sure you don’t want it?” (Lamie)

“Todd’s store!” (Sonia/Maria/Hana/Ratt)

Sonia, Maria, Hana, and Ratt-kun all reacted with excitement.

“Is it famous?” (Lux)

I asked, and Ratt-kun grabbed my shoulder tightly.

“It’s super famous! You can’t get it without lining up! Lux-kun! You absolutely have to accept it!” (Ratt)

The women’s expectant gazes were also focused on me.

“…Alright, I’ll accept it gratefully.” (Lux)

I told Lamie-senpai, and a cheer similar to the one at our first victory erupted.

“That’s good. Well, see you later.” (Lamie)

Lamie-senpai said and then walked away briskly.

As I watched her back, I suddenly felt a gaze and turned around.

Rita-san was silently watching me. Rita-san had participated as an observer for this match, but for some reason, she hadn’t spoken to me. When our eyes met, Rita-san winked at me. I returned the wink, and somehow, I felt the sense of victory finally sink in.
