**Previous Day’s Diary**
Tomorrow is finally the interclass competition. Although the competition itself started today.
The interclass competition spans seven days and is quite a large-scale event. There are 27 teams in a tournament format. The top three teams from the previous year with the best records are seeded. The tournament is divided into three blocks, with four matches held each day for the first round. This goes on for three days.
From the fourth day onwards, the second and third rounds take place. Seeded teams join from the second round. On the final day, the seventh day, the championship is a three-way battle. The teams that make it to the final in this competition are designated as seeded teams for the second-semester competition.
The tournament draw was decided quite early on, so practice matches could be arranged in advance.
Our match is the first one on the morning of the second day. By the way, the first team from our class to compete was led by Saxon, the Earl Crush. Their match was the third on the first day. Earl Crush faced a team from Class 2-A.
We listened to the match updates broadcasted through a loudspeaker stone in our classroom. The commentary was handled by a senior from the third year. Their ability to provide a vivid and engaging commentary was crucial. It seemed that seniors with good speaking skills are chosen for this task, and they provided an impressive, immersive commentary.
Saxon and the Earl Crush team put up a good fight but lost. Sighs of disappointment filled the classroom.
And then, the night before our match, Ratt-kun, Frank, and I secretly gathered at the training grounds.
—
“It’s kind of scary at night.” (Ratt)
Ratt-kun shivered as he stood on the hill of the darkened combat area.
“Really?” (Frank)
On the other hand, Frank seemed completely unfazed.
“Alright, let’s set it up quickly and go back.” (Lux)
I said as the shadows of the three of us moved under the moonlight.
—
Finally, the morning of the first match of the interclass competition arrived.
Since our practice match the other day, our team, Catrap, had established a flow where I came up with strategies, and Heinz and Maria would bring them to a practical level. When I proposed the strategy this time, they were quite surprised, but they still managed to organize the team to move effectively. They were amazing. We formed a huddle, pumped ourselves up with a “Let’s go!”, and headed to the starting point.
The 2-C team was already waiting at the meeting place. The instructors were also gathered.
Rick-san, representing our team, greeted them with, “We look forward to a good match,” but their leader, Ritter, just snorted in response. Seeing this, Maria, who was also a noble, got upset and said, “If you’re a noble, act like one”, Ritter glared at her, even though he was the same person who had bullied the cat.
“Um, if we win against you, could you answer just one question for us?” (Lux)
“Hah, if you win? Did you hear that, Zess?” (??)
A student acting as a guard for Ritter, who seemed to be a Heavy Trooper (Armor), laughed at my words.
So, the cat bully’s name is Zess.
“Didn’t you learn from the practice match?” (Zess)
“Hey, Zess, they’re trying to muster up some courage. Let them have their fun.” (??)
The members of the opposing team mocked us and egged Zess on.
Zess clicked his tongue and said…
“Fine. But if you lose, for the next year, you have to call me ‘Zess-sama’ when you greet me.” (Zess)
His team burst out laughing again.
“Agreed, that’s fine.” (Lux)
I said, then asked one of the instructors.
“Is such a bet valid?” (Lux)
The instructor replied…
“As long as there’s no exchange of money, it’s fine.” (??)
With that, the head referee instructor raised his voice.
“Then, we will now start the interclass competition between Team Gentis and Team Catrap! Knights (Ritter), step forward!” (??)
Zess and Maria stepped forward, and were asked to call heads or tails. Maria chose tails.
The instructor flipped the coin, caught it, and revealed the result. It was tails.
“Team Catrap, which side do you choose?” (??)
We were asked to choose our starting point either the north or west street of the academy’s main street. We chose the north street, as we would set up our base in the forest, just like last time. If Zess’s team set up their base on the northwestern hill again, the north street would be more convenient.
“Alright, 15 minutes from now, a blank will be fired to signal the start. From then until the end of the match, leaving the area is prohibited! Dismissed!” (??)
Following the instructor’s instructions, we all ran to our designated spots. Thus, our first interclass competition began!
