Tests, and Then

**Today’s Diary**
Today is the day the test results are posted.
Heinz and Hana, who couldn’t go to the mansion because they had to study, channeled their frustration into the test.
Summer vacation is coming, and more importantly, the first semester’s interclass competition is just around the corner.
Test results are handed out individually in the classroom, but the names of students who need supplement classes are posted in the hallway.
Early in the morning, we all went to check the notice.
—
The day after we visited the mansion,
“I want to go too!” (Heinz)
“Gozaru, gozaru!” (Hana)
Heinz and Hana protested.
“Not until the tests are over.” (Maria)
Maria was getting more and more formidable every day.
“You guys might not even be able to find it since you’re not chosen.” (Frank)
Frank teased.
Frank’s presence was growing every day too. That was a good thing. Though Heinz and Hana grumbled, they continued to study diligently and faced the test day. To be honest, it was just the first semester test for first-year students. It was not that difficult. I also felt pretty confident as I finished my test. And today, we would find out the results.
“I’m nervous…” (Heinz)
Heinz’s face was tense. Just like when we gathered at the library, we dorm mates waited in the hallway connecting the dorm and the school building. From a distance, I saw Hana approaching. Her head was down, her shoulders slumped, walking as if she was about to receive a death sentence. Maria was next to her, holding her hand as they walked together. Rick arrived a little later, and everyone was present.
We walked down the hallway together. There was a crowd of people ahead, probably where the students’ names, who required to go for supplemental classes, were posted. There was a student who had collapsed to their knees and was being comforted by friends, causing Heinz and Hana to step back.
“Um, could someone go check first, degozarimasu?” (Hana)
Hana hesitated again, adding an odd ending to her sentence.
“Oh, come on, it’s okay. Go check for yourselves!” (Maria)
Maria, who was younger, scolded them, and Heinz and Hana reluctantly walked into the crowd. We watched from a slight distance. After a few moments of nervously examining the list of students needing supplemental classes, we saw Heinz and Hana hugging each other in joy.
—
We had lunch in the usual courtyard, with the previously nervous Heinz and Hana, who were currently in high spirits.
“Thanks to everyone! I’m really grateful!” (Heinz)
Heinz expressed his thanks to everyone again.
“Now we can visit Maria’s house without any worries, degozaru!” (Hana)
Maria smiled happily at Hana’s words and then looked at me.
“By the way, how about Rita-sensei and Norris?” (Maria)
“Oh, I was waiting to check their results before talking to them. I’ll talk to Rita-san today.” (Lux)
“Alright. Let me know once you have the final count.” (Maria)
“Sure, we should know by today or tomorrow.” (Lux)
With this cheerful conversation, our lunchtime passed pleasantly.
—
In the evening, after classes ended, I knocked on the door of the staff room where Rita-sensei was.
“Come in.” (Rita)
Rita-san spoke in her usual calm voice.
“Lux, what brings you here?” (Rita)
I explained that I had been invited to spend the summer vacation at Maria’s family estate, the noble Bell Household’s residence, and that Maria had also extended the invitation to Rita-san and my younger sister Noris, considering Maria’s circumstances.
“The Bell Household, huh? That sounds great. Hmm, but what to do…” (Rita)
Rita-san looked a bit troubled.
“Is there something you need to attend to?” (Lux)
“Yes, actually. I can’t go into details, but there’s a military assignment I have to handle. However, if it’s alright with the Bell Household, could you ask if I can join a few days later? If they agree, I’d be happy to go. Of course, Noris can go with you from the beginning.” (Rita)
“Understood. I’ll check with Maria.” (Lux)
After confirming Rita’s possible dates for joining, we concluded that conversation.
“How about the upcoming interclass competition?” (Rita)
Rita-san asked.
“I’m not sure how it will go, but I’m thinking of ways to win without targeting people directly.” (Lux)
Rita-san nodded with satisfaction at my response.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of strategy you’ll use. I’ll be there as an observer.” (Rita)
She sent me off with a smile.
I have to make sure I don’t disappoint her.
The interclass competition was just around the corner.
