Study Time for Test

**Today’s Diary**

After the practice match, I devised a new strategy. When I asked Fol-sensei if it was against the rules, he replied that as long as it wasn’t direct, it was acceptable. He mentioned, “Every few years, someone like you comes up with such peculiar ideas,” so I wasn’t the first one to think of something like this.

Having received permission from Fol-sensei, I immediately consulted with Frank, the Engineer (Tech), and Ratt-kun, the Spearman (Lancer). Both were surprised but excited about the idea. Since we need to test if it can actually be done, it might be a while before I discuss it with everyone.

Shifting the topic, summer is approaching. After the inter-class competition, there’s supposed to be a one-month summer vacation. However, depending on the results of the comprehensive tests, there might be supplementary classes. Although I was late to enroll, I worked hard at night to catch up. I didn’t want to disappoint Rita-san for my sister, Noris, either.

Thanks to that effort, while my grades aren’t top-notch, they’re slightly above average. Among Team Catrap, Maria and Sonia are the top two in grades. By the way, the top student in the entire year is Rona-kun. As expected. The ones anxiously facing the risk of supplementary classes are Heinz and Hana.

“Plans for summer vacation? Going back home?” (Maria)

Maria asked during lunch break.

“Hmm, since I don’t have family in the southern village, and it depends on the situation with Rita-san and my sister, I’ll probably just relax in the dorm.” (Lux)

The fact that my sister was staying at Rita-san’s house was well known within the team. Actually, after my first visit to Rita-san’s house, I had been there a couple of times, though with different people. Maria, who was the same age as my sister Noris, seemed to get along well with her.

“I’ll probably stay in the dorm too, as my parents are still not fully on board with me attending this school.” (Sonia)

Sonia said. She admired Rita-san and enrolled in the academy against her parents’ opposition.

“Oh, I’ll also be in the dorm. Lux, let’s go fishing during the summer vacation.” (Heinz)

“Really, Heinz, you’re staying at the dorm too? You’re not going back home?” (Lux)

“Yeah, it’s a bit far for me. I only go back once a year or so.” (Heinz)

Since Heinz is staying, it seems like I won’t get bored.

“I’m from this city, so it doesn’t really change much for me, degozaru…” (Hana)

Hana’s parents lived in the Rodon city, so she commuted from there.

“I’m going on a trip with my wife.” (Rick)

Rick-san said. With a stable income now, he wanted to treat his wife.

Ratt-kun and Frank were going back to their families. They mentioned that they received letters asking them to return home.

“Maria, you’re going back too, right?” (Lux)

Maria is a noble daughter of the Bell Household, one of the prominent nobles in the country. Her family will likely be insisting that she come home.

“Yeah, about that. If it’s okay with everyone who’s staying behind, would you like to come with me, Lux, Heinz, Sonia, and Hana? And of course, Noris too. Even Rita-san, if possible.” (Maria)

Maria’s family seemed to feel somewhat guilty about sending her to a military academy, even though it was at the Princess’ request. They were worried about her well-being in such a dangerous place as a military school due to Maria’s quiet personality.

“Sebas-san regularly reports to them, though…” (Maria)

Sebas-san was the head butler of the mansion Maria’s family had reserved in this city. He was an elderly gentleman with neatly groomed silver hair and a distinctive combed-back style. Since he often waited at the school gate to pick up Maria, I had greeted him a few times. In other words, Maria wanted to show her parents that she was doing well with her friends. In exchange, the Bell Household will cover all travel and accommodation costs.

“I’m grateful, but what about everyone else?” (Lux)

“I want to go too!” (Sonia)

Sonia immediately agreed.

There was a brief moment of silence. Normally, Heinz and Hana would jump at such an offer, but they both had a hesitant look on their faces.

“What’s wrong?” (Lux)

I asked.

“… It’s a very tempting offer, but… there’s something important first.” (Heinz)

“Something important?” (Lux)

“… The fact that I can’t completely rule out the possibility of supplementary classes.” (Heinz)

Heinz said, dramatically spreading his arms and sighing, and Hana mirrored the pose, shaking her head…

Why don’t you study?

“Don’t leave me behind! Please don’t leave me!” (Heinz)

“Gozaru.” (Hana)

After hearing Heinz and Hana’s sad pleas, we decided to hold a study session for them on short notice. After classes ended, we headed to the library.

The library at this academy was a bit unusual. It was located outside the main building, which was locked at night, but it was open 24 hours to academy affiliates. It was not the only one in a separate building. Rather, when heading from our dormitory to the main building, the first things we encounter were the library, the night security room, and a rest and nap room for the soldiers who patrolled the city of Rodon at night. Beyond that was the entrance to the main building, which was locked at night.

The primary purpose for night access was to accommodate the soldiers on duty. The nights were long, and patrols were conducted by a mix of active military personnel and third-year students. While card games were a classic time-killer for soldiers, gambling with students, who were also nobles, was problematic. As a result, physical training was a common way to pass the time. This setup was established when the new building was constructed.

Additionally, it was as expected from a military school. The latest technology was developed enough that it ensured the library, rest rooms, and security room were brightly lit even at night, though I didn’t fully understand the mechanics behind it. I had found that many people use the library even late into the night, making it a quiet and luxurious place to spend time. I quickly grew fond of it and often spend the night before breaks there.

Gathered at the library were the members of Team Catrap.

We first checked which subjects Heinz and Hana struggled with and which ones they were good at. It turned out they weren’t performing well in any subject. Honestly, they didn’t seem like they would struggle with studies so much, but the cause was simple. Both of them had spent most of their study time sleeping. If they were not paying attention in class, their test scores were obviously bound to suffer.

“Why don’t you sleep properly at night?” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun asked in a soft voice.

“Well… ninjas are supposed to thrive at night, so I’ve been focusing on night training, degozaru.” (Hana)

Hana replied, apologetically in a quiet voice.

“Yeah, and nights are pretty busy for me too.” (Heinz)

Heinz added, but fell silent when Sonia gave him a stern look.

“Well, if you review the classes you missed, you should be able to get decent scores on the tests. Even just looking at everyone’s notes might make a big difference.” (Rick)

When Rick-san came to their rescue, Heinz and Hana silently clasped their hands together and thanked everyone.

While Heinz and Hana busily copied everyone’s notes, the rest of us decided to read our books of choice. Maria brought a book with illustrations of animals and was studying it intently. Rick-san brought a cookbook and was reading it with interest. Ratt-kun was also looking at a cookbook, but probably for different reasons.

Frank had a book on the structure of guns. Even though he seemed to have it all figured out, he was still reading it with enthusiasm.

Well, as long as he’s enjoying it.

As I was browsing the bookshelf for a story to read, I noticed Sonia crouching at the corner of the bookshelf, peeking around. I silently approached and looked over Sonia’s shoulder to see what was happening.

“I can’t believe it.” (??)

“It’s true, I swear.” (??)

I could hear their hushed conversation.

“The seven mysteries of this academy, deep within the school…” (??)

“The ghost of the western-style mansion…” (??)

“It’s just a rumor, right?” (??)

“No, it’s real!” (??)

It seemed they were discussing something unsettling, but they were soon interrupted by an instructor who told them to be quiet. The two of them apologized and left the area.

“What was that about?” (Lux)

I asked Sonia. She seemed surprised to find me behind her and let out a small scream. Hearing this, the instructor who had scolded the two earlier shot us a glare, so Sonia and I quickly decided to leave the area.
