Rita’s Skills

**Today’s Diary**

This academy has many instructors, most of whom are active military personnel. So, there is a high turnover rate. When the front lines intensify, the number of instructors decreases, and when the front lines calm down, the number of instructors increases.

The current situation is the latter. Since the front lines are relatively calm, many instructors are taking a break and strolling around the academy. Some instructors are even said to be here more for leisure in the city of Rodon rather than for teaching.

For some reason, despite having been enrolled for two months, I had not yet attended a class with Rita-san. However, today, she was finally going to stand before us as our instructor.

So, I decided to write about it in my diary before going to bed.

This academy also had an urban training ground. It was an astonishingly large area. The area was centered around one main street and two long alleys. There were intricate, winding paths and various buildings of different sizes. It was a fully-realistic cityscape that would take an hour to walk from one end to the other at a leisurely pace.

When the members of Class 1-C were gathered at this urban training ground, Rita-san and another female instructor who seemed to be around the same age as Rita stepped forward.

This other instructor introduced herself as Lulu.

She had a dignified rather than a beautiful appearance, with sharp eyes. She had the image of a soldier on the front lines. As expected, Lulu-sensei’s specialty was the Raider (Commander).

“Now, today we’ll practice detecting enemy Scouts and Raiders (Commander). Each team should position themselves in a location that is easy to defend and detect scouts. After a set time, we’ll move and assess the results. We’ll evaluate you if you manage to stay hidden until the end or if you prevent us from getting within range. Of course, you can also attack. You have one hour to prepare. Any questions?” (Rita)

There were a few questions, and Rita-san answered them accurately.

“Well, I think that covers it. Then, you have one hour starting now. Begin!” (Rita)

Receiving Rita-san’s signal, we all dashed off at once. Rita and the other were sitting on a convenient barrel, facing away from us, and trying not to look in our direction.

Not long after starting, Team C led by Roy-kun, slipped into a solid building.

I watched this with admiration. Rita probably didn’t expect them to barricade themselves in a nearby building. It was a clever move that exploited a blind spot. Seeing this, Ratt-kun asked everyone in a low voice.

“Should we go inside a building too?” (Ratt)

Sonia answered.

“But if we do that, won’t we lose track of them when they get close?” (Sonia)

I see. That’s one way to look at it.

Meanwhile, Saxon and Team A dashed into the right alley.

“I wonder what Saxon’s team is going to do.” (Frank)

Frank, who struggled with running, panted while muttering.

“Probably a standard base setup, I think.” (Heinz)

Heinz replied. He anticipated so since there were several U-shaped spaces suitable for bases deep in the alley and they would use one of them.

“So, what should we do, gozaru?” (Hana)

Maria was the first to answer Hana’s question.

“How about we go up there?”

She pointed to the sky.

“Rooftop, huh? Sounds good. It’s decided.” (Rick)

Rick and I agreed, and we began searching for a building with a suitable rooftop.

The allotted time passed, and Rita stretched a bit before getting off the barrel she had been sitting on.

“So, what are we going to do?”

When asked by Lulu, Rita laughed as if to say “I already know what you’re talking about”.

“Well, I’ll stand out in the middle, so Lulu, you quickly suppress the area.” (Rita)

Lulu frowned and rejected the idea with a comment.

“That role isn’t suited for Rita. It’s something only someone like me, who combines beauty and strength, can handle.” (Lulu)

Seeing this, Rita gave a wry smile and said.

“Well then, as the decoy with both strength and beauty, I’ll leave it to you.” (Rita)

With that, she gracefully disappeared from sight.

“Roy, the instructors have started moving.”  (??)

A teammate, who was monitoring from the edge of the window, reported.

“Let’s hold our breath until they pass.” (Roy)

Roy said, and everyone nodded silently in agreement.

“Wait… I lost sight of Zalard-sensei.” (??)

The monitoring teammate said with a hint of panic, but Rona calmed them to calm down.

“And Lulu-sensei… what is she doing?” (??)

A few people reacted to this, peering cautiously out of the window. The next moment, crash! The window next to the one they were peering through shattered.

“Eek!” (??)

A small scream escaped from someone.

“Everyone, be quiet!” (Roy)

Roy urged in a hushed voice, and everyone covered their mouths to silence themselves.

“Yeah. Your leadership is quite good. But you need to be more broadly vigilant.” (Rita)

Rita’s voice came from behind Roy. The sound of the door opening hadn’t even been heard.

Thus, Team C was quickly subdued.

“Somehow… Lulu-sensei is rampaging through the main street…” (Sonia)

Sonia, who was lying low on the rooftop and observing, said with an exasperated tone. Lulu was walking around, casually firing her rubber bullets at buildings that caught her eye while humming a tune. She had no intention of hiding.

“Where’s Zalard-sensei?” (Rick)

Rick-san asked, but Sonia shook her head.

“Not in sight. Only Lulu-sensei is on the main street.” (Sonia)

“What about the back alleys?” (Frank)

Frank asked. I was monitoring the back alleys.

“Well, there’s no sign of them, so I don’t think they’re there.” (Lux)

“Maybe they went towards Team A?”

Ratt-kun asked with a somewhat disheartened tone, and Heinz admonished him. Then, a rubber bullet from Lulu-sensei hit the building next to ours with a loud bang.

Ratt yelped softly, “Whoa!”.

Lulu-sensei’s rubber bullets continued to hit our building and nearby structures, causing everyone to quickly duck and shield their heads to avoid the impacts. At that moment…

“Yeah. The idea for the base location wasn’t bad, but if you’re going to be cautious, you need to keep an eye on all sides,”

Rita-san said so as she jumped from the adjacent building to where we were and landed without making a sound.

Shortly after we were subdued, Team A also returned, having been defeated. We were stunned by the overwhelming difference in skill. As Rita began to explain the points for improvement, Lulu-sensei interrupted.

“Rita, I don’t think they’ll be able to process anything you say right now. Hey, didn’t you all realize just how big the gap is between you and the professionals?” (Lulu)

All of us nodded, somewhat dejectedly.

“Don’t worry. Rita is among the top three scouts in terms of skill. It’s rare to encounter such an anomaly even on the battlefield. And as for me, I’m an outstanding Raider (Commander) as well!”

Well, Lulu-sensei just seemed to be wandering around and causing chaos…

“Oh? You thought I was just aimlessly wandering the main street, didn’t you?” (Lulu)

…No, not at all.

“I was drawing attention to gauge the presence of the group. Don’t try to imitate that if you’re just beginners like you!” (Lulu)

She laughed heartily. Then, she suddenly withdrew her smile.

“But don’t forget, the enemy might have top-class individuals as well. Those who ignore that possibility won’t last long.” (Lulu)

With that, we realized Rita-san’s exceptional skill and tightened our resolve.
