“…If you listen to what I say, I might tell you about the ‘Jet-Black Shield Casparleague’, nya.” (Casparleague)

This kitten… it was making an incredibly devious face. To obtain the ‘Jet-Black Shield Casparleague’, I either had to ask this guy or defeat it and I was not sure I could do that.

Please, stop glaring at me like that.

“Sigh… So, what do you want?” (Harold)

“Oh, it’s simple. Just tear apart the intruder who dared to encroach on my territory, nya.” (Casparleague)

His words were fierce, but his kitten appearance made it lacked the punch. Still, despite his playful demeanor, there was a hint of sadness in his golden eyes.

I see.

“I refuse.” (Harold)

“Why, nya!? Don’t you want the ‘Jet-Black Shield Casparleague’, nya!?” (Casparleague)

“I do, but…” (Harold)

Despite its appearance, this Casparleague was said to be a dangerous creature in the legends of the Dehaubalz Kingdom. Though in ‘Enhaz’, it was just a mid-boss. I figured it wouldn’t be much of a challenge to defeat. But if it was asking mere humans like us for help, it means it was dealing with something beyond its capabilities. It might even be a raid boss-level threat.

My goal in this ‘Enhaz’ world was to live quietly and safely. I wanted the ‘Jet-Black Shield Casparleague’ to protect myself and Alexandra. Getting involved in more dangerous affairs and dying before the main storyline even starts would defeat the purpose.

And…

“Your Highness Harold…?” (Alexandra)

I didn’t want to put Alexandra in danger.

“Do you think the intruder is a human, nya? You don’t need to worry! It’s definitely a beast, so it’s not a problem, nya!” (Casparleague)

Seeing my reluctance, Casparleague tried to persuade me desperately, misunderstanding that I was concerned the enemy might be human. However, his insistence only made it clearer that this intruder was likely a very dangerous beast.

” Your Highness Harold, perhaps we should first ascertain the nature of this ‘intruder’ he speaks of.” (Alexandra)

“That’s right. I hate to say it, but with Milady and me, we can handle a fair number of magical beasts.” (Monica)

The two, having been completely charmed by the cute appearance of the black kitten, were siding with Casparleague.

Well, if it seems too dangerous, we can just retreat.

“Sigh… If we find it’s too much for us to handle, we’ll turn back immediately. Agreed?” (Harold)

“Of course, nya! But I’ll only give you the ‘Jet-Black Shield Casparleague’ if you defeat that magical beast, nya!” (Casparleague)

In contrast to my sigh, Casparleague was grinning from ear to ear. Given this reaction and the fact that he switched to offering the reward only upon success, it was easy to imagine that this beast was a formidable opponent.

“Follow me, nya!” (Casparleague)

With Casparleague happily leading the way, I sighed once more and followed him.

After following Casparleague for about two hours, we neared the center of Moone Island. It was not a very large island, so we should be close.

“Alexandra-dono, are you alright? …That’s a silly question, isn’t it?” (Harold)

“Yes, I’m fine.” (Alexandra)

I was concerned that her full armor might be heavy and hot, but she appeared cooler and more composed than I was, walking with a light step. It seems our physical abilities were worlds apart.

“So, how much farther to this magical beast?” (Harold)

“Shh! It’s just around the corner, nya.” (Casparleague)

Casparleague, skillfully placing a paw to his mouth, signaled for us to be quiet. His heightened caution indicated two things. First, if we were detected, we would be in immediate danger, indicating the beast was very dangerous. Second, if we remained quiet, it wouldn’t notice us, suggesting its detection abilities weren’t that great. Casparleague’s focus on sound suggested this magical beast might rely more on its ears than its eyes.

And then…

“The beast is just ahead, nya.” (Casparleague)

In the shadow of the tall grass, Casparleague stopped and in a stark contrast to his previous demeanor, he looked seriously at us. He seemed to be trembling slightly as well.

“I see…” (Harold)

I parted the tall grass and peered through.

What!? Ah… How could I not have realized this the moment I knew Casparleague was here?

There, in stark contrast to its snow-white skin, was a grotesque, repulsive, and corpulent giant sow. It wasn’t just any magical beast but the fallen form of a once-sacred beast, a former servant of the gods.

—Raid Boss, ‘Gluttonous Beast Henwen’.
