First Time at Military Training Building (1)

**Today’s Diary**
The field cooking training until yesterday was interesting but a bit tiring.
Today, the first-year students have a half-day off and we have a meeting at the military training building in the afternoon. It will be my first time at the military training building.
After having a slightly late breakfast, I went outside and saw Sonia. I was worried about her since she seemed a bit down yesterday, but when she saw me, she ran over and told me that she had talked to Rita-san. She said that if I needed anything, I could come to her for advice.
She was probably referring to the homework assignment Rita-san gave me, “Lead your allies to victory without sniping anyone”. I wasn’t sure how she found out from Rita-san, but I thanked her and told her I’d ask for help if I needed it.
—
It happened last night.
Rita prepared some tea and placed a cup in front of the somewhat nervous Sonia before sitting down herself.
“Now, you said you wanted to ask me about Lux, right?” (Rita)
“Yes…” (Sonia)
Having come with such enthusiasm, Sonia now seemed to be calming down and thinking about how to start the conversation. Seeing this, Rita decided to help her out.
“Did you perhaps witness Lux’s true sniping skills?” (Rita)
Sonia’s eyes widened.
“So, Rita-sensei, you knew all along!?” (Sonia)
Sonia exclaimed. It seemed Rita’s guess was correct. When Rita heard about the skill test Lux took on his first day, she thought his abilities would be well-known quickly. However, the instructor only gave him a moderate evaluation, which puzzled her a bit. Seeing Sonia’s reaction, Rita realized that this might have been the first time Sonia truly saw Lux’s real skills in action or felt its impact.
“Well, I’m the one who brought him here, after all. Can you tell me what happened?” (Rita)
Sonia, then, recounted the events of the field cooking training, adding gestures to her story.
“While perched on such an unstable spot up in the tree, Lux shot the boar as if it was nothing. I intended to ask if he aimed for the head, but he said he aimed for the eye. And when I checked later, it really was precisely shot through the eye.” (Sonia)
Recalling the scene, Sonia muttered, “I can’t believe it”, shaking her head slightly.
“I see, if Lux said he aimed for it, he surely did. When I accompanied him on a hunt, he did even more impressive things. It was like seeing a hallucination.” (Rita)
Rita said, and she began to tell Sonia the story of how she met Lux. After sharing the story, Rita-sensei proposed an idea to Sonia.
“Even though it’s by chance, I think it’s a good opportunity that Lux’s true abilities aren’t widely known yet. This could be his chance to grow.” (Rita)
She then mentioned the “homework” she had given Lux and that was leading his allies to victory without sniping anyone until the first competition was over.
“You don’t need to keep it a secret forever, and sooner or later, everyone will know about Lux’s abilities. But until then, can you keep an eye on him? For his sake and for the sake of your team.” (Rita)
Sonia seemed to understand the importance of not becoming too reliant on Lux and nodded firmly.
“Understood.” (Sonia)
Sonia nodded vigorously.
“Just remember, Lux might struggle with the homework, so please support him when he needs it.” (Rita)
“Yes! I understand!” (Sonia)
Sonia replied with much more enthusiasm than before, and Rita saw her off.

On the way to the military training building, Heinz, who came along with me, called out to an upperclassman who was walking on the sniper floor.
“Saras-senpai!” (Heinz)
The tall person called Saras turned to look at us.
“Uh, Heinz, right?”
Saras said, trying to recall.
“Yes, I’m Heinz, a Shooter! Thanks for the other day!” (Heinz)
Heinz responded cheerfully to everyone. His communication skills were indeed impressive.
“Oh, no problem. So, what brings you here today?” (Saras)
Heinz placed a hand on my back, pushing me forward a step.
“This guy here is Lux, a Sniper who enrolled late. Can you introduce him to the club president?” (Heinz)
“Oh, right, I heard about a new student joining late. So, you’re Lux. Nice to meet you. I’m Ded Saras, the vice president.” (Saras)
“I’m Fort Lux. Nice to meet you!”
I greeted enthusiastically and shook Saras-senpai’s hand.
“Well, I’ve got to head to the Gunner (Shooter)’s regular meeting, so I’ll leave you here.” (Heinz)
I thanked him over his shoulder and followed Saras-senpai.
From above, the H-shaped building’s first-floor area designated for Snipers which covered half of the floor. Each military specialty, regardless of the number of members, occupied half of their respective floors. The leftover rooms were used for storage and other purposes.
“By the way, Lux, you’re carrying quite a vintage bag.” (Saras)
Saras-senpai’s eyes narrowed with interest at the worn, deep green gun bag inherited from Ojii-chan.
“I got it from my grandfather, along with the rifle inside. On my first day, the instructor mentioned it’s an old model called a ‘Counter’ long rifle.” (Lux)
“Interesting. Let me give you a heads-up. The leader of the Sniper Club has a fondness for unusual guns. She’ll probably be very interested in your rifle. Just remember, she means no harm.” (Saras)
While saying something unsettling, she swiftly moves forward on her long, slender legs. After walking a bit, Saras-senpai stopped at a particular room and knocked.
“Ramie, are you in?” (Saras)
She called out.
“Come in.” (Lamie)
A woman’s voice responded from inside.
Opening the door, we stepped into a small but neatly arranged room. A bookshelf exuding a sense of history added a dignified air. At the sturdy wooden desk in the center sat a beautiful woman with short, pale golden hair.
“And who might this be?” (Lamie)
The woman looked at me with a cool look on her face, and then Saras-senpai said…
“This is the new student, Lux. Remember, the advisor mentioned someone joining late?” (Saras)
“Oh, right.” (Lamie)
She stood up and her footsteps clicking with a satisfying click as she stood in front of me.
“I’m Kinder Via Lavitomivia from 3-A, but my name is long and hard to remember, so just call me Ramie. I’m the president of the sniper circle. Nice to meet you.”
She said all that in one go and then held out his hand. I was slightly taken aback.
“I’m Fort Lux from 1-C, I’m from the southern village. Nice to meet you.” (Lux)
I responded and shook her hand.
Lamie-senpai nodded in satisfaction and was about to return to her seat when she suddenly stopped, her gaze fixed on the gun bag slung over my shoulder.
“Lux, your rifle doesn’t seem to be a common model…” (Lamie)
“Yes, it’s a sniper rifle called a Counter that I inherited from my grandfather…” (Lux)
I began, but before I could finish…
“A Counter!! The legendary masterpiece from the Zenar workshop, created 35 years ago, renowned for its unparalleled effective range despite not being mass-produced! However, its overly delicate nature made it a sniper’s nightmare, only 50 were ever made, each with a hidden serial number… And this is the first time I’m seeing a functioning one in perfect condition. It’s rare to find Counter users who’d let anyone even glimpse their rifle since they’re all veterans! Come on, don’t keep me in suspense, show it to me!!” (Lamie)
Lamie-senpai’s rapid-fire monologue left me feeling a bit intimidated, and I looked to Saras-senpai for help.
“I told you, right? She’s a bit of a rare gun enthusiast. That’s why she’s a sniper despite being from a noble family. She means no harm and will handle it with care, so could you let her take a look?” (Saras)
With an attitude suggesting this was routine, I sighed quietly and took the rifle off my shoulder to show her.
