Cooking Lesson in Forest! (2)

(Thank you for reading at bayabuscotranslation.com)

Sonia’s face was red, and she was looking down for some reason.

I wonder if she’s happy because she managed to catch her first prey? I remember how thrilled I was when I caught my first one. I get it.

Sonia was trembling with joy to the point where she couldn’t move for a while, so I thought I should just leave her alone, but then, flapping sounds echoed as the birds all took off at once.

“!?” (Lux)

Sharpening my senses, I scanned for signs. It was a big, aggressive beast, and it seemed angry.

“Sonia, come over here. Can you climb onto that branch?” (Lux)

Taking Sonia’s hand, who was still bent over, I led her to a nearby tree that looked climbable. Sonia seemed confused by the sudden change, but seeing my serious expression, she nodded slightly and grabbed onto the branch. I helped Sonia climb the tree and told her to move to the next branch up. After making sure she had moved to the top, I took out my rifle and climbed up to the branch she had been standing on.

“Lux, what’s going on all of a sudden?” (Sonia)

Sonia asked anxiously, and I put my finger over my mouth and said, “Quiet”.

The presence was close. I prepared my rifle.

Hopefully, it’s not a beast that’s good at climbing trees.

There was a brief silence. The opponent was also cautious. As I held my breath, the beast stirred again with a rustle, peeking its face towards me.

About 80 meters ahead, there was a large helmeted boar. Its skull was literally thick, as hard as if it was wearing a helmet. It could deflect bullets with its forehead from the front, making it a challenge for hunters. Moreover, it was aggressive in nature and would charge if it saw you as an enemy. Even if its target escaped onto a tree, it might ram into the tree and knock the enemy down or break the trunk.

“Aah…” Sonia nearly let out a cry at the sight of the massive creature but managed to hold it back just in time. Good job holding it in.

The helmeted boar still hadn’t noticed us. Perhaps it was curious about a scent, sniffing the ground repeatedly. I quietly took aim. If I wanted to kill the boar in one hit, I would aim for its eyes. If I made a mistake, the enraged boar might charge towards us. It would be dangerous, especially with Sonia here too.

I calmed my nerves. In my mind, I envisioned a water surface, and wait for the ripples to settle.

*Tum*

With a light sound, the bullet was fired and pierced the right eye of the boar. The boar convulsed once and slowly fell sideways.

“Phew…” (Lux)

Confirming that the boar had stopped moving, I let out a deep sigh. The distance wasn’t that far, but shooting was tense for the first time in a while, especially with Sonia around. My hands were sweaty.

Oh no, I need to check on Sonia.

I looked up at the branch where Sonia was perched, and she was staring wide-eyed at the boar.

“Sonia, it’s alright now. You can come down. Just be careful not to fall.” (Lux)

Sonia snapped out of her trance at my words and pointed hesitantly at the boar.

“Hey… Lux… Did you really… aim for that?” (Sonia)

She asked me.

“Of course. The eye is the most certain target for a boar.” (Lux)

“…No way… That’s impossible…” (Sonia)

Sonia shook her head slowly, looking incredulous.

It’s not really that difficult once you get the hang of it.

I helped Sonia down to the ground, and then I quickly began draining the blood from the boar and the bird I had caught earlier. Sonia still seemed a bit dazed.

“Sonia, do you know where Rick and the others are based? I need help carrying these. It’s too much for me alone. Could you go get Rick or Heinz?” (Lux)

“Oh… um, okay. I’ll be right back then.” (Sonia)

What just happened? I mean, even if he’s lived by hunting, can he really do something like that? But then again, he missed the target on the first day…

Confused, Sonia hurried towards the base camp.

Upon hearing Sonia’s story, both Rick-san and Heinz came over.

Hana and Maria had already returned, so they moved directly to the campsite where Frank and Ratt-kun were stationed. After finishing the butchering, we tied the limbs of the boar to a wooden pole and awkwardly carried it back to the campsite. As we finally arrived, the rest of our team welcomed us with cheers.

“Wow, incredible! Are we going to eat all of this?” (Ratt)

Ratt-kun seemed especially pleased with securing such a substantial catch. Maria seemed a bit taken aback by the massive size of the boar and observed it from a distance.

“I’ll go fetch the instructor to check the ingredient. It’s going to be a hassle to carry this as it is!” (Frank)

Frank exclaimed as he ran off. While waiting for Frank to return, I was bombarded with questions about how we managed to catch it. Sonia quietly watched the scene unfold.

When the instructor arrived, he looked at the catch with a bewildered expression.

“If I recall correctly, Fort Lux was a former hunter in this team… This is your doing?” (Instructor)

“I got the helmeted boar, but Sonia caught the bird.” (Lux)

Sonia seemed like she wanted to say something but hesitated and remained silent.

“I see. So, everything you’ve caught can be eaten. Excellent work. Your team is the best.” (Instructor)

With those words, everyone exchanged high-fives with their nearby teammates.

“But, instructor, the helmed boar is too much for us to eat alone. I’d like to share some with other teams, and if there’s any left, perhaps with other classes.” (Lux)

The instructor shook his head.

“While it would be the right decision in an actual battlefield, today’s experience is crucial for each team to procure their own food locally. It’s an important lesson for teams that fail to secure food and go hungry the next day. So, I think…”

The teacher thought for a moment.

“Yes, take what you’ll eat today and divide it accordingly. I’ll buy the rest from you.” (Instructor)

“Well, if the instructors are going to eat some, we can give away the rest…” (Lux)

“No, let them buy it properly. You’ve all achieved something significant. It’s only fair that you receive compensation.”

The instructor said with a grin as he took out several silver coins.

The next day, our team Catrap successfully completed the training without any problems and finished the camp cooking training with high marks. Even though there were concerns about two of them being a little inexperienced in cooking, they managed to produce decent dishes with the help of the group that could cook. I was a bit worried about Sonia not being very energetic, but we returned to the academy in high spirits.

We returned to the academy when the sun had already set. After parting ways with everyone, Sonia hurried to the instructor’s office.

Fortunately, there was light leaking from Rita-sensei’s office, indicating she was still there. She took a deep breath in front of the door, steadied herself, and knocked.

“Come in.” (Rita)

She heard Rita-sensei’s voice and entered the room, feeling a bit nervous.

“Oh? Sonia, isn’t it? Wasn’t today the field cooking training?” (Sonia)

It seemed she had just finished her work. Rita-sensei asked casually. Without answering that, I moved forward eagerly.

“Rita-sensei! I have something I want to ask about Lux-kun!” (Sonia)

Rita-sensei looked slightly surprised, but then smiled a bit and gestured for her to sit down.

TLN: POV is sometimes changing multiple times in a chapter. I’ve decided to put all honorifics so that’s easy to guess whose current POV.
