Attendance Number 13: Glass Rick

**Today’s Diary**

Today was a fulfilling day. I was able to explore the academy and got along well with Team B members. I’m talking about Rick, the oldest member of Team B.

I was surprised to hear that Rick-san and I have an eight-year age gap. Still, it’s strange that we’re classmates. Rick-san’s troop type is Heavy Armor. Clad in magical energy, a reliable troop that protects us on the front lines from bullets.

Rick-san used to be a former blacksmith. He gave me something really nice.

It has been three days since I enrolled. I couldn’t say I had gotten used to it, but I had managed to look around a bit. Up until now, Heinz would take me out to various places after class, but today he had something to do and went off somewhere first. So, I decided to explore this vast academy alone until dusk.

Beyond the school building where the classrooms were located was a building called the military building and a building called the research building. In addition to shooting ranges, auditoriums, and buildings that Heintz didn’t seem to use for anything, there was an old school building that was currently not in use. Just visiting these places alone will take several days.

Apparently, there are warning tags on places students shouldn’t approach, so I needed to be careful not to overlook them as I wander around. As I went on, I could see a battlefield with a vast forest and artificial rivers and mountains made inside the academy.

While letting out a small breath at the sheer scale of the school, I instinctively sought out greenery and wandered over there. There was something calming about being in the forest. Just as I approached the edge of the forest, I heard rustling and instinctively tensed up. Classes were already over, so only someone like me would be in a place like this. I reached for the gun (counter) slung over my shoulder.

Inside the bag where the gun (counter) was stored, there was a thin iron plate just enough to deflect small bullets… it was not much, but better than nothing. Still, I pulled the gun bag in front of me. In the dim light, I saw a figure, and nervously frozen.

“Oh? Lux-kun? What are you doing in a place like this?” (Rick)

It was Rick-san who appeared.

“I was exploring the academy, but… what about you, Rick-san?” (Lux)

Rick-san touched his chin, where a stubble bordering on stylish beard could be seen. He looked somewhat troubled.

“Ah, Lux-kun. Sorry to ask, but it would really help if you keep it a secret that I came out from here.” (Rick)

“Um, well… It depends on the reason…” (Rick)

“Oh, no, I wasn’t doing anything related to crime or such. I was just picking these.” (Lux)

He opened a cloth bag he held in one hand. Inside were mushrooms.

“Oh, aren’t these Wamo mushrooms? They’re delicious, aren’t they?” (Lux)

As I responded like that, Rick-san nodded happily.

“Oh, Lux-kun knows his stuff too. Right, I remember you said that you made a living by hunting in the countryside. Actually, I found this patch during training the other day. I thought I’d add something to dinner.” (Rick)

Rick-san scratched his head bashfully.

“If that’s the case, you don’t have to be so secretive about it.” (Lux)

“Well, technically I’m picking them without permission on the school grounds. I’ve never heard it’s explicitly forbidden, but it feels a bit awkward.” (Rick)

Despite being much older than me, Rick-san chuckled awkwardly, which made me laugh a bit strangely.

“Got it. I’ll keep it a secret, so next time, please tell me the spot too.” (Lux)

“Gotcha! Leave it to me.” (Rick)

He said while patting his broad chest. Then I walked next to Rick and chatted with him to the school gate.

“Why did you join the academy, Rick-san?” (Lux)

“Well, I was originally born in a town a bit further north. I worked as a blacksmith there. But then, this war turned the town into a battlefield. We were all driven out. Well, I had a trade, so I was taking it easy, but I was naive. All the craftsmen from my town fled south, naturally leaving an excess of craftsmen…” (Rick)

Rick-san looked a bit sad and continued.

“So, I gave up being a craftsman for a while and tried to start a new job with my wife…” (Rick)

“Wait, Rick-san, you have a wife!?” (Lux)

“Yeah? Did I not mention it?” (Rick)

I was a bit surprised. I thought since we were students, he might not be married or something.

“Well, leaving that aside, things didn’t go well with the job, and somehow we drifted to this city. I took the aptitude test as a last resort and passed. At least here, I won’t have trouble with my wages, so I’m grateful.” (Rick)

“Oh, I see. You’ve been through a lot…”  (Lux)

“Well, I’m old enough to know that, but I’m a freshman like you, so I hope we get along.” (Rick)

“Yes, of course!” (Lux)

With that conversation, we reached the school gate, where I parted ways with Rick-san and headed back to the dormitory.

The next day, after finishing lunch and chatting with everyone from Team B, Rick-san beckoned me from a slightly distant spot.

“Hmm?” (Lux)

Approaching as called, he said, “Thanks for yesterday,” and handed me a metal object shaped like a Y.

“What’s this?” (Lux)

“It’s called a slingshot. Put a bullet on the firing part, pull it back, and it becomes a handy weapon. You can infuse magic into the handle, so it’s quite effective for aiming at long distances.” (Rick)

“You’re giving this to me?” (Lux)

“Yeah, I made it during my days as a craftsman, but I made it too powerful. I couldn’t handle it properly, so I just tossed it into my toolbox, but I remembered it yesterday. You never know what might come out of the bushes… not everyone you meet is a good person.” (Rick)

He chuckled while handing over the slingshot.

“I replaced the rubber, so you can use it right away!” (Rick)

“Thank you very much! I’ll gladly take it.” (Lux)

“Yeah, I have no use for it personally, so I’d be happy if you used it.” (Rick)

I grasped the slingshot with my left hand, created a magic bullet, and pulled the rubber.

Yeah, it feels good. I want to say something to thank you…

Looking around, I spotted something suitable up high. I aimed at a giant tree in the courtyard and released three shots in quick succession. A moment later, fist-sized nuts fell.

*plop*

*plop*

*plop*

I picked them up and handed them to Rick-san.

“It’s really a humble thing, but these are Sako fruits. If you peel off the outer skin and roast them, they’re very delicious. They’re so tasty that birds almost always get to them first, so they’re quite rare.” (Rick)

Surprised by my action, Rick-san looked puzzled.

“Oh, uh, thank you. Oh, they’re edible? I’ll give them a try.” (Rick)

He said while somewhat perplexed, as he accepted them.

Just then…

“Hey!! You two!! It’s time to get back to class!” (Heinz)

Heintz’s voice called out, and I hurriedly made my way there.

Watching Lux run off, Rick stared at the giant tree Lux had targeted with the slingshot earlier. It was his first time knowing such nuts grew on it. He squinted and saw something resembling them high up. It was near the top of the tree.

“…Did he just… aim and drop those? No way.” (Rick)

Shaking his head to dismiss the thought that had just crossed his mind, Rick hurried off to the classroom.
